SIMpad forum / Siemens Bootloader Extended Commands
« on: October 07, 2006, 10:55:13 pm »
hi,

what i dont understand here.

the first flash chip is at 0x0-0x10000000
second flash chip is indeed at 0x0800000-0x09000000

whats this about 0x05080000 and stuff? thought that was just virtual addresses?

but i'll admit i don't know much about jtagging and such

thanks for anything that would clear up my confusion,

cmonex

Just to correct my own post - I was wrong. The 'x e0' and 'x e1' commands appear to work the same on rev. 2.4 and 2.5.3 Siemens bootloaders.

e0 erases the flash from 05080000 to 06000000 (16Mbytes minus the boot loader)
e1 erases the flash from 08000000 to 09000000 (16Mbytes)

Assuming that these Siemens EEPROM addresses are correct, then the 'y' erase flash option in the 2.5.3 bootloader appears to show the wrong addresses for erasing ??
'y' reports to erase the flash ROM between 05080000 to 07000000

I think that this should be 05080000-06000000, 08000000-09000000 using the Siemens memory map ??

Note that the 'y' erase flash option is not available in the original 2.4 Siemens bootloader. However it does appear that the extended commands 'x e0' and 'x e1' commands perform the same function to erase the flash, and can be used in both the 2.4 and the 2.5.3 Siemens bootloaders.

The 'x eb' extended command provides an extremely useful method of going back from the Siemens 2.5.3 bootloader to the original 2.4 bootloader.

So we can erase all of the flash in the Simpad using the E0/E1 commands, except for a small area at the start of the second EEPROM chip (4 flash erase blocks or 512kbytes) corresponding to the area occupied by the bootloader in the first EEPROM chip.

Incidentally the 'x' commands E0 and E1 appear to work differently with the original Siemens 2.4 bootloader, to the modified (linux/WinCE) 2.5.3 bootloader. Using the E0 and E1 commands allows you to delete different areas of the flash from the 2.4 bootlader (similar to the 'y' command with the 2.5.3 bootloader).

Every other use I can think of myself using a mini-computer, whether work or play, the much higher processing power and storage capacity of the UMPC is worth the compromises, (battery life, boot up/resume from suspend time, etc.) if they get the prices down to a more competitive level.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125615\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

um, well, wrong thinking  (IMHO)
you can't exactly state battery life is the same as processing power. the user may need one of these more badly than the other.

so, if the UMPC (and not just a UMPC but one that is this small. not all are small enough  ) is 1000$ and this zaurus is 600$ i would probably choose the zaurus

Yeah, za710.zip is a whole directory structure. What would it take to install an application like this on the Zaurus? Another one which is similar is Cinderella. As I recall that too was a directory structure without an IPK in there. Using the Zaurus install program it won't recognize these applications.

I'm new to this stuff...and installing the IPK packages came pretty naturally. But how to do it when you don't see an IPK?

Thanks...

well i didnt try java on the z yet (planning to do so) but if there isnt some jar file you can click on, then you could run a command to start up the application. in my little experience the commands vary from JVM to JVM  so a little documentation of the jvm can always help..

sorry but you're wrong on this one- there are drivers even for your 730W, may make that piddle pee cee (i.e. pocketpc) more useful
The only thing that'll make it more useful is if I remove wince

Quote
try to search for them, there's one version called the deje usb drivers.. and there was some other one... if i find it i'll let you know..
When I did the searching ages ago the only ones I could find was from a company which made CF->Usb-host adaptors (IIRC), but at the time the download links didn't work. If you do find the links please let me know.

<rant>
Anyway part of my point was, why aren't drivers included? People who buy wince machines aren't exactly the brightest people around (yes I'm stupid to have bought one) they want everything pointy-clicky and plug-and-play and most wouldn't know to go search for drivers.
</rant>

In the meantime the Asus has been put into deep storage waiting for the day when this is ready:

lol yeah the pocketpc OS is sooo stupid.

well, i think the drivers are usually included with WM5, also with many devices with ce.net 4.x (not WM!)..
so it is partially the OEM's decision (stupid or bright one  )

btw one of the things i like about the dist i'm using on my zaurus is that i love not having to install drivers for my cf IO cards (wlan, bt)

I wonder if it isn't price as well. a Zaurus @ 500-6x0 usd new is a hefty enough price.  2000 usd for a flybook is a bit much.  At that price pont it becomes neither fish nor fowl... too big to be ultraportable, too small and too 1g crusoe powered to be comparable to a similarly priced notebook from apple or dell or gateway....

For the same 2k usd one could have a zarus, a nice laptop, a good sized usb external hd and a few hundred change.

edit: on the other hand, a slightly larger zaurus with pretty much nothin but a little more screen (maybe a 4.5-5" 800x600 max?", more battery, more ram, bigger (8+?)microdrive, video accel/video out, wifi and bt for a hundred or 2 more might be pretty decent.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125489\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

exactly my thoughts!!!

This comes to mind:
http://www.sharpusa.com/products/TypeLandi...1056,74,00.html?

Not very successful, though fairly cool series. You can even put Linux or *BSD on them if you can find an archive that has the files still.

I don't see how an improved & modernised version would fair any better than that iteration, even running Linux. Especially now that you can get a full-power PC in a size not much larger.  Anything like a H/PC would now have to be priced very cheaply to even be considered versus a UMPC, particularly when sub-$600 UMPCs are expected. "Why run a Word substitute when you can just run Word?" will be the question most people will ask if something like what you desire comes out.

erm... the HVGA version of sharp mobilon wasn't actually such a great line.. hm well the keyboard rocked but nothing else did...
the VGA versions were nice but too big for me.

i would still buy a hpc today..  but there aren't any new ones..

Sharp ROMs / There Goes My Cacko ...

hm, hm, as for approved hardware.. i must've gotten lucky... tried 3 wifi cards, 5 bluetooth cards (4 different models), one lan card
all worked

the linksys thing should work IMO (it is just a prism chipset..), did you try a cardctl insert 0 when the connect button is greyed out? do you have the network icon at all on the taskbar/tray? (it is white/yellowish and looks like a power plug, at least to me  )

It's a moot point that a machine is usb-host capable when it runs wince, because there are hardly any drivers available. My Asus A730W is only able to recognise a mouse - no webcams, no digital cameras, no card readers.

so with those drivers they can handle the digi cams (not all of them but many) and card readers, hdd's, mouse, keyboard, etc... sometimes even usb wifi and bt.. but the latter requires hacking.. but the WM5 pda's with usb host don't even need hacking.. plug in the usb bt (one of the correct brands of course) and off you go..
even the hpc's from 1999 can do most of this..

but this is off topic, just wanted to correct a few statements, that's all

Software / Which Rom Is The Best For Me ?

the stock kernel with the stock sharp rom is pretty buggy but with tetsu kernel installed which has all the kernel patches applied, the battery level is pretty accurate and not the 3 level anymore.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=125301\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

lol i'm still not sure whats this tetsu kernel. but the battery measuring in cacko 1.23 is pretty bad, i mean some moron thought to specify 50% as 3.6 volts..... of course i can still calculate the real % from that but it would be nicer if it would show the correct % by default.
so you say the tetsu one doesnt do this?

AFAIK it's somewhat of a "damned if you do and damned if you don't"-situation. Even though there's still people walking around who claim that even LiIo/LiPo batteries suffer from the dreaded "memory effect" of olden days, this is simply not true.

sorry but why are you so sure it is absolutely not true?

afaik there can be a memory effect for li based batts too but the good news is it can always be cleared unlike with nickel based batteries.

hmm, i didn't find out how to autogenerate the bookmarks.

i know how to go into full screen but mobipocket just does it better. i can see more text (better formatted maybe?)

thanks for the other tips though
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124279\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Autogen is on the Marks menu.

You can get more text on the display by adjusting the text size, reducing the size of the margins and, if you still want more, reducing the amount of leading between lines.

I've attached a screenshot of the most I can personally tolerate on my SL5000.

This is using the smallsmooth font with the top margin set at 5, the bottom margin to 0 and the left and right margins to 20. I've set the line leading to -4 (yes, -4, i.e. less than 0) and the paragraph leading to -1.

Is this closer to what you had in mind?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=124325\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

wow yes this screenshot is closer to what i'd like...  i'll check this out...  thanks!
