[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi

I've recently purchased (arriving soon) a SL 1000 off a friend who no longer wanted/never used it.  As I have very little knowledge of the Zaurus I was wondering what software/application/uses it would be best used for.  I currently have a Palm TX which I use for music, photos, video and PIM functions.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Regards

Software / Konqueror3-embedded Or Minimo

I am looking at the new minimo and it looks good on windows mobile. maybe we should start porting the new release to the Zaurus or build konqueror3-embedded instead? which one would be more popular? konqueror probably would be faster....

Thank you so much for writing up some good docs for emulators.  This is one of the main reasons I got my C1000.

I would like to help with screenshots when I get some time to spend on emulation this week.

Soon your document will grow large enough that you must break it off into one page per application.  =)

Looking forwards to the screenshots! Thanks!

Software / Which Game Emulators Run At Full Speed?

which game emulators run at full speed?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78054\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

of the emulators i've tried here's the results (with stock libsdl and sharp rom v3.x):

gb (zgnuboy) - full speed
mame (zmame) - depends on processor being emulated. i've discovered z80 based games tend to play at full speed 90% of required frame rate. you're safe with pacman, space invaders all the old classic.
c64 (frodo) - full speed, but you need to select defaults settings if you're using sl-5500. i think this is because it's compiled for cl-xxx series zaurus which are considerably faster.

check out the link in my sig to see which games are playable on these emulators. i've completed my gameboy games review. i'm currently reviewing mame. next on my list is snes.

General Discussion / Console, Mame And The Sharp Rom
« on: June 12, 2006, 10:42:23 am »

I am in the process of building a miniature MAME cabinet which is where my Zaurus SL5500 will live some of the time.  I switched to the Sharp ROM as it's quite stable and things just seem to work.  However, I would like to work out how to get MAME running on it.  I'm a little clueless at the moment so please be gentle.  I extracted the ZMAME files from the binary archive at mameworld and I am guessing executing that from the console will work (eg. zmame pacman) but I can't find a console.

Also, can anyone recommend a frontend to ZMAME?

Thanks,
Tony

sounds like a cool project, did you ever finish it? i'd like to have seen pictures of your miniature arcade cabinet.

if i was going to do a similar project i would've opted for one of the cl-xxx zaurus. they have usb host capability, which means you could've plugged in a usb joystick/pad and have that as part of your controller for your cabinet.

Software / State of emulation on 5xxx series?

I'm considering buying a Zaurus 5xxx for the obivous reasons however I would like a decently capable gaming device as well.  I see that the Zaurus has an impressive list of emulators however I'm having trouble coming up with information on how well they perform as well as how difficult they are to control with not-quite-a-gamepad Zaurus controls.  The ones I would be most interested in are NES, SNES, and SMS.  I also saw that there was a version of Quake ported to the Z.  What kind of abysmal framerates would something like that crank out?

Thank you for your time.

Mike

i'm currently going through a load of games suitable for snes, gameboy, c64 and mame. my general experience as been that all 8-bit computers and consoles emulate at 1:1 speed (if not faster). this applies to mame games using the z80 processor.

16-bit and more advanced mame games will be have some form of slow down on the sl-5500.

i've read in one of the post that quake has started to speed up because of the use of soft floating point maths, but this may only be applicable for more advanced zaurus models i.e. cl-xxx.

check out my signature for a link to my wiki page, you may find it useful to narrow down your search for games suited the zaurus joystick layout.

if all you want to do is play emulators you may want to think about a gp2x whose architecture is better suited to this than the zaurus. also the emulators whether ported or native are being handled by guys dedicated to the cause rather than just porting over like for like. this is what i plan on doing.

Software / Billiardz, Where To Find Newer Ipk?
« on: June 07, 2006, 01:29:19 pm »

I found billiardz_0.1.3_arm.ipk at the Sharp website, but it caused the screen to lockup.
I had to remove the battery on one occasion. I checked & unchecked Display with magnified screen.
running as root, it fails to write to a directory that has been fixed in the 0.1.4 version.
I noticed billiardz_0.1.4_arm.ipk on ELSI and killfiz, but the page that it's located on is gone.
Does anyone have this?
I've been trying it on a C3100
Googling for billiardz_0.1.4_arm.ipk, just takes me to old forums or dead links.
Thank you,
Jon

et viola zaurus.spy.org comes to the rescue: [a href=\"http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/docs-zaurus-com/billiardz_0.1.2_arm.ipk]http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/docs-zaurus-co...z_0.1.2_arm.ipk[/url]

yes it's 0.1.2, but it's better than nothing.

Software / Mame For The Sharp Rom
« on: June 07, 2006, 01:25:03 pm »

I've searched the forum and a couple of months ago Cresho announced he's gotten Mame to work under the Sharp ROM and was gonna release an ipkg soon.

Since then nothing... Nothing else seems to be ready for the Sharp ROM.

Is there a working Mame for the Stock ROM? Cresho?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi!

I got zmame working on Sharp ROM. You need the following IPKs

zmame - [a href=\"http://zmame.mameworld.net/]http://zmame.mameworld.net/[/url]
libsdl - http://www.self-core.org/~kaoru-k/pub/libs...0030704_arm.ipk

Hope this helps!

I'm interested in emulation, but so far I've been disappointed by the speed of most emulators I've tried on the Zaurus.   I like that you talk about how well each emulator performs.   I'll have to give Frodo a try.

I'll also be interested in your Mame results,  I tried one version of mame but found it too slow.  I remember playing early versions of Mame on my 486DX4, at full speed!   The Zaurus should be fast enough to run at least some Mame games full speed, but I think the Mame code got bloated and slow over the years
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=129539\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

thanks for the feedback! give me a shout if you need a hand with frodo. it was a bit tricky to get working.

i'm going give the mame games a stab next. i suspect auto frameskip rate will play a big part of emulation

now if only someone would port fuse, or give me some usable spectrum emulator i would be sorted!

i just hope can finish the majority of my mini retrogaming site before i get my gp2x in august, otherwise i feel you'll see a dip in the site's updates

Thanks for the site.  It was an interesting read and will check back often.  Will you also be covering native game file interpretors for the Zaurus like ScummVM, Exult, or Sarien?  I find those usually give you the speed boost that traditional emulators are lacking on the Zaurus.  I'm having a blast with ScummVM right now on my Zaurus.  I have got a decades (1987-1997) worth of LucasArts games loaded on my Zaurus at the moment.

thanks for the feedback! as soon as i feel i've filled out the c64, mame and gb sections i'll start on them next!

hi all!

i've been lurking for sometime here and i've learnt a lot. i'm hoping to give something back.

i just wanted to share with you a webpage i'm currently working on, where i review various emulators and their games.

nothing new, but with respect to the games, i have hand picked the games that suit the zaurus' controller and have the best playability.

i'm an old skool gamer (used to own a c64)   so i'm not easily seduced by fancy fmv cut-scenes.

i'm currently wading my way through gameboy and c64 games. next up will be snes and mame.

the web page can be found here: http://booyaa.org/dokuwiki/zaurus/gamingonthego

please pm or leave your comments. i would grateful for any feedback.

thanks!

booyaa

p.s. once i've got my head around bb code, i'll try to post excerpts of the web site here.
