Software / executing (say) jSolun from command line
« on: May 25, 2004, 10:59:01 am »
Greeting.
I\'m having trouble executing a Java app I downloaded from the Software Index.  For reasons that seem ok to me, I didn\'t want to \"install\" it but just put the .jar file on my system and execute it manually.  First of all, the site claims that it works on the Z.  Second of all, I can execute it on my PC just fine (the syntax for \"java\" is a little different from \"evm\").
I put the downloaded jar file, jSolun100c.jar, on my SD card, under QtPalmtop/java.  If I look at the jar file on the PC (jar tf jSolun100c.jar), it appears that the \"main\" class is \"JSolun\".

Then I type in at the console:
cd /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/java

then:
evm -cp /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/java/jSolun100c.jar JSolun

I get what I gather from posts here is a classic: \"java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: JSolun\"

Any ideas what I\'m doing wrong

Accessories / more battery for my zaurus
« on: April 26, 2004, 04:57:47 pm »
I don\'t know if this should really be a separate topic but it seems pertinent.

When using a battery extender device (say, the Semsons pack) with 4 NiMH batteries, how does one know when to recharge the NiMHs?  They (that is, Radio Shack) say to discharge the batteries fully between charges but there\'s no easy way to recognize when that is other than the yellow light on the Z (but that seems an inelegant way).

33
See, I\'m pretty sure I\'m incapable of holding down the C and D keys simultaneously, not to mention pressing that tiny button under the battery at the same time.

I find this discussion a little scary, to be honest.  I don\'t know about a \"typical\" user, but I want a mobile computer.  I sometimes use the PIM stuff but it would never sway my buying decisions.  I need to edit text (Word is nice but any text editor will do for me); a spreadsheet app of some kind is a must; and a platform of some kind (JEODE is fine) to load my own programs in some language.  The more choices of connectivity (with and without wires), the better.

Now, what I don\'t like doing is changing ROMs every - well, ever!  I upgraded to Sharp 3.1 because it seemed like I was being childish not to, but I held my breath the whole time.  I want a stable OS that I don\'t have to upgrade more frequently than ?yearly?, and then with as little messing around as possible (the Sharp loader from the PC with the cradle suits me JUST FINE).

Am I odd man out?

It doesn\'t seem to be in the ZUG Download yet, unless I\'m looking in the wrong place.

5x00 General discussions / installing new battery - weird behavior?
« on: March 22, 2004, 10:09:14 am »
Greeting.
After a couple of years, it was time to buy a new battery, which I did.  When it came, I followed the instructions which were:
1  plug the Z into the AC adapter charger
2  flip the \"replace battery/normal ops\" switch
3  remove the battery cover; remove the battery
4  remove the old battery; insert new battery; replace cover
5  flip the switch back to \"normal ops\"

When I did all that, the amber light was flashing - not a good sign
I did it all again, putting the old (still serviceable) battery back in.
Horrors! The amber light was still flashing.  According to the manual (I know, who reads the manual?) that means the battery is no good.  I could see the new one being defective but the old one?
I put the new one in - still flashing.
Then, on a whim, I unplugged the adapter from the Z and plugged it back in.  Voila!  Now the charging light was on as normal charging.

Is this the expected behavior?

Accessories / Targus IR Keyboard Help
« on: March 15, 2004, 05:01:12 pm »
I have a Targus Uni. on a 5500 with Sharp 3.1.  I loaded the IRK package and had no problem.
You\'re right that there\'s no on/off; when the keyboard is open, it\'s on.  There is, however, an on/off switch on the Targus settings.  When you choose Targus (from among the data entry choices), a settings bar should come up and the default is \"off\".  Choose \"on\" and it should work.  At least it does with Sharp3.1.

5x00 General discussions / 5500 version 2.38
« on: March 15, 2004, 01:51:31 pm »
Welcome to Zaurustralia.  I think the 3.1 ROM is sufficiently better than the 2.38 to make it worth your while.  Do you have a docking cradle?  If so, and if your connection is to a Windows PC, the upgrade is pretty simple and the instructions are at the Z site.  There\'s lots of help available right here, too.

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: Zaurus 5500 AC connector
« on: March 15, 2004, 12:29:17 pm »
I hope you get yours back but...
You can an equivalent from RadioShack (and elsewhere, I\'m sure).  You want a 5V, 2-2.5 amp adapter (with the right DC tip).  I bought one at RS for about $12-15 (I don\'t remember) so I could have one at work and one at home).

Software / Hancom Mobile Sheet deletes entered formula
« on: March 12, 2004, 04:22:17 pm »
As it turns out, there is:
Quote

CONCATENATE (text1,text2,...)

Text1, text2, ...   are 1 to 30 text items to be joined into a single text item. The text items can be text strings, numbers, or single-cell references.

Remarks

The \"&\" operator can be used instead of CONCATENATE to join text items.

Examples

CONCATENATE(\"Total \", \"Value\") equals \"Total Value\". This is equivalent to typing
\"Total\"&\" \"&\"Value\"

are you, by any chance, saving this file as .xls rather than native Hancom?  That would explain it IF you\'re not using any other Hancom functions that do not exist in Excel.

General Discussion / Poll: Will the Zaurus be relevant in 2 years?
« on: March 05, 2004, 04:28:32 pm »

The \"rub\" is that having a broader user base--which Sharp could have achieved by better promoting its Zaurii--would have meant more commercial (\"plug-and-play\") peripherals, software, cases, and all the other little extras that come to market when their makers think there are enough potential buyers to justify developing them.  Sharp\'s marketing failures have not only cost the company revenue--they have also cost the Zaurus and those of us who use it a \"place at the table\" in the handleld accessory aftermarket.

I\'m curious (and I know it\'s probably been discussed elsewhere but I wasn\'t paying attention).  What software is \"missing\" from the Zaurus?  I really like the suite that Sharp supports and, with Jeode, I can cobble up little apps of my own in Java and be happy as a clam(shell).

Greeting.
I have an SL5500 with Sharp ROM 3.1.  I use embeddedkonsole (just because I haven\'t needed to use anything else).  Is there a way to change the list of \"useful\" commands in the pull-down menu?

General Discussion / How to access the "terminal"???
« on: March 01, 2004, 01:49:53 pm »
If the 5600 keyboard is the same as the 5500 keyboard (and I think it is) the \"/\" is there (along with the \"?\").  It\'s the \"\" that isn\'t.  On the 5500, that\'s Shift+tab.

General Discussion / Battery problem
« on: March 01, 2004, 12:52:55 pm »
I agree with your assessment.  I think the first thing I would try (because it\'s the cheapest I can think of) is to buy a DC adapter from, say, RadioShack (or equivalent).  I got a variable voltage (including a 5 volt setting), 2.5 amp adapter for ~$12US (if I remember correctly).  If that doesn\'t fix your problem, you probably have a bad battery.
