General Discussion / Sprint PCS CF2301 and C860
« on: September 04, 2004, 06:10:53 am »
Hi David,

I was able to use my CF2031 in a 5600 and a 6000 but I was unsuccessful in my attempts in using it with a 760.

Hopefully someone else can tell you differently and help you out based on their experiences.

6000 - Tosa / USB HD attached to Z!
« on: August 24, 2004, 12:14:16 pm »
I have a 40gb Toshiba drive in a drive enclosure I bought from computer geeks for about $10. It has two usb connectors with one for power. I must either use a powered hub or plug it into an available usb port to supply sufficient power for the 6000 to properly recognize the drive.

I'm thinking about trying one of the following:

Lil Sync Battery Adaptor
Boxwave Minisync Battery Adapter

Another benefit of using this is with a usb sync cable, you can also power and charge the zaurus.

6000 - Tosa / USB Hotplug Issues
« on: August 16, 2004, 04:21:39 pm »
Just to follow up my original post, I was able to add usb device support for an unrecognized cf cardreader.

I downloaded the kernel source for the 6000 from Sharp's Spacetown website. I then downloaded and installed a cross-compiler toolset (thanks Ashitaka!). I realized that I did not need to compile and install the kernel as usb device support is actually in the module usb-storage.o. I updated unusual_devs.h with the appropriate information for the cardreader and then a "make modules".

I copied the new usb-storage.o to my 6000 and attached the cardreader. Examining dmesg showed that the device was properly recognized and I was then able to mount a cf card.

General Discussion / What to Do With 2.5in Hard Drives?
« on: July 29, 2004, 06:50:12 pm »
Sorry as I should have read your post a little closer.

This might be a little complicated as the 44 pin connector carries power to the notebook drive as opposed to a 40/80pin ribbon. You will probably have to isolate your power supply from the power coming from the Zaurus.

I don't know if this will help but this link points to a great resource for custom ide cables. They describe various combinations of 2.5 and 3.5 drives in laptops and desktops.
Good luck!

6000 - Tosa / USB Hotplug Issues
« on: July 28, 2004, 05:47:21 pm »
I've been able to connect and mount almost all sorts of usb storage devices including cameras, hard drives, flash drives, etc with the exception of a simple cf cardreader. From examining dmesg output, the system does not quite make the jump from recognizing the device and loading usb-storage to where it is setup as a scsi device (sdaX).

From what I understand about hotplug, if you have a device that is not properly handled, you can update unusual_devs.h and then recompile the kernel.

This brings up another issue. Has anybody successfully compiled and install the kernel for the 6000 from source? I downloaded the kernel source from Sharp Spacetown but I've yet to make any attempts to work with it. I just noticed that Sharp USA has it also.

Anyway, I was just hoping to hear from anybody that has already struggled with some of these issues. Thanks!

Why don't you try one of these (Notebook Adapter). Then all you would need to do is supply power through the power connector.

Sunrise savings at Computer Geeks (www.compgeeks.com). Pretty good deal as I bought the 6 ft cable for $17.95 plus tax locally. This price is good until about 9:00am CDT. They currently have 10 available.

I'm using a CF2031 with my SL5600 with Sprint. It seems to work fairly well. I also use an Aerlink npc with my Verizon phone. This is not high speed but about 12k. There is a high speed option for Verizon but I've never tried it.

As far as the CF2031 working with the 6000, I can't say at the moment but I'll be able to tell you next week!

CF2031 drivers for the 5600 and the 6000 can be found at SDG Systems website. There is limited functionality for the Zaurus. You cannot use the cell phone functions (afaik) as with the ppc/pc. hth.

Linux Issues / nmblookup & smbmount - please please help
« on: May 23, 2004, 06:39:27 am »
If you are allowing access to all to your share, you still need to provide a valid user/password to get access. Also if you have created a directory called \"/mnt/smb/mp3\" then that is what you should use. I think this may work for you:

smbmount //192.168.1.100/K /mnt/smb/mp3 -o username=validuser,password=validpassword

If not then swap the ip with your computer name, add workgroup and ip. You may also need to run this command as root.

I have no idea what your config is on either side (zaurus/win) but the more specific you are with smbmount the better. For my win98 box, this works for me:

smbmount //host_name/sharename /zaurus/mountname -o username=username,password=password,ip=ip

where host_name is the name of the win98 box, sharename is the name of the share on the win98 box, mountname is a existing directory on the zaurus, username is a valid user on the win98 box, password is the pw of the user and ip is the ip of the win98 box. hth.

Accessories / Opinions on GPS on ebay

Looks like the GlobalSat BC-307. I have one, while a little quirky, it does work. If you search the archives for \"BC-307\" or \"BC307\", you will find more information. hth.

Mike,
I don\'t think it\'s a zaurus thing but probably a bc-307 thing. It seems to be an initialization problem when qpeGPS is trying to start gpsd. It very well could be a permissions error. If I can sort it out with more detail, I\'ll pass it on.

I hope you get it working.

Robert

Hey Mike,
To be completely honest, I don\'t use qpeGPS that much. I installed it to get gpsd which is required for roadmap.

I usually get the same error you do everytime I start qpeGPS. Sometimes qpeGPS does not start and I need to use \"ps -A\" to identify and kill the still-running process. The most consistent procedure I have to start and stop qpeGPS is the following:

a) Start qpeGPS. Ignore the error message by selecting \"Ignore\".
 Insert the BC-307. Start a terminal session. Issue a \"cardctl resume\".
c) Switch back to qpeGPS. Place the cursor on the Args prompt. Press enter.
d) After closing qpeGPS, remove the BC-307.

This assumes a modprobe serial_cs and the proper arguments for starting gpsd (\"-p /dev/ttyS3 -s 4800\").

I think you are close. Follow these instructions and I think you will have it up and running but probably not the way you will want to use it.
Regards,
Robert
