Good idea, but I\'d prefer to do this on the wiki. Sometimes people get things wrong and if this were to happen in the FAQ forum then the posts would start meandering again.

Si

One part of the idea was that the FAQ forum was moderator controlled (read-only for everyone else), so that should keep items correct, on-topic and concise (Since the moderators would perhaps edit for clarity)

There are alot of people that simply jump to a site, specifically to post a message and don\'t look at the whole site (and this is a pretty big site).  I think that 90% of your duplicates probably come from theses users.

However, a \"FAQ Forum\" would possibly catch the attention of the user before they post, since they need to look for the appropriate forum to post to (well, they should anyway).

Duplicates, loss of great ideas/knowledge, and out-dated FAQs, are probably the biggest problems with most user groups IMHO, and I really believe that this would be a tremendous help...or be a complete waste of time   (covering all bases here, heh heh)

But I am new here, so I will leave to you senior guys/gals to decide.

On last thought.  The FAQ Forum could have as itt\'s first posts info about FAQ and wiki.   (Cause I don\'t know what wiki is   )

General Discussion / C860 (or 7XX0) Top (most favorite) apps

I am trying to setup my C860 as fast as possible so I am wondering...What are your favorite Apps for your clamshell unit.

I just migrated to the Cacko QT rom, so please note which rom you are using (and if the app(s) would run on the QT rom, if you happen to know).

Thanks.

Here\'s a thought, what about creating a FAQ forum (controlled by the moderators and read-only for everyone else.)

That way as the same question gets asked a few times (or even the first time, but is a great question/answer) it can be moved/copied to the FAQ forum.

The FAQ forum should consist of (more or less) exact questions and pointed answers...much like a FAQ.

This solves the several probelms at once:

1) The forum search will hit both FAQ and forums (\"one search to rule them all\"  )
2) The community can note (to moderators) what they believe are good canidates for FAQ forums.
3) It would contain ONLY on-topic (concise) threads, instead of the wandering nature of most thread (which is generally fine for other forums). This may require some editing by the moderators before placement  into the FAQ fourm.
4) (This is a guess) I would imagine moving/coping the posts from the originating forum to the FAQ forum would be easier (than to copying to the FAQ file itself). Also, the FAQ forum would tend to stay more up-to-date than the actual FAQ... due to the dynamic nature of the originating forums.
5) A nice source for updating the real FAQ from time to time.
6) Can eventaully become a FAQ forum CATEGORY once it gets big enough (ie: A catgory containing forums like: Hardware FAQ, drivers FAQ, Development FAQ, 5500 FAQ, 7XX0 forum, etc).

The problem with FAQ files is the F (Frequently)....Oftentimes it is the infrequent questions (that require some discussion, research, and \"back and forth\") that tend to get lost in the forums as they get older (and never qualify as FAQ material).  Some really good insights (that are not \"frequently\" asked, tend to never make it to the FAQ file, but are really very useful.  Generally more complex topics (like MAME setup,  Tricks/tips/shortcuts, config issues, etc, etc) can generate new development branches if they were placed in an area of high exposure over time.  So the FAQ forum could concievably contain these threads but in a more concise Q and A format.

Just a thought.  I have never seen anything like this before, but I really think it would be a boon to keep the duplicates out and also to keep the infrequent (but highly useful) questions right out where people can see them (and in the case of technical Q and A\'s) build upon them.

General Discussion / Bricked Zaurus SL-C860. Please help!

 Only Idea I have is that perhaps the battery is dead?

My 5500 won\'t run without a battery (or a dead one I suppose), but I am unsure about C860 (i should try but I don\'t have it with me right now).

If the Z won\'t run with a dead or missing battery, then perhaps your charging circuitry on the C860 is bad.  I have heard alot about this on the C760, but never on the C860.

(As a matter of fact, I was curious if perhaps the whole reason for the C860 was to fix the bad charging circuity, since there seemed little reason to come out with a whole new model and dicontinue the C760.)

Anyway, that idea (of the 860 being released to fix a charging circuit problem) would really be counter to my suggestion that perhaps it is not charging the battery...but like i said, it is just a theory.  You may want to charge the battery for a good 5 hours and see if you get any current from it using a multimeter.

Hope this helps.  But I am sure the expert minds in this forum will have better suggestions thatn mine.

General Discussion / C860 Question (Five questions)
« on: April 15, 2004, 12:01:04 am »
I have tried a bunch of legacy 5500 games (and other stuff) on the the C860 and I was wondering a few things....

1) Is there anyway to get the auto-rotation to stop (or triggered manually) so that I can play the games in landscape mode?  I mean I would rather have it use half the screen than have it in portrait mode and be impoosible to play becuase space key is generally fire and I can\'t play most of the games because the space key is so far away from the  arrow keys.

2) Is there a really good (and LOUD) alarm program for the C860?  I tried the trusty 5500 Alarm clock program and it must be running to work (which is not going to work for me) also, I tried an \"Alarmed\" appointment (on LOUD) and it is really lame...so quiet that it will never wake me up.  (I like that the C860 has a real speaker, but for an alarm clock it is WAY to quiet).

3) Is there a list anywhere of stuff specify written for the C7XX C8XX units?  I mean, it seems like 99% of the stuff out there is made for 5500 and hence kicks it into portrait mode (see number 1 above) which I really dislike.  I bought this unit to use in landscape mode, but all the programs are written the other way.  So, if there was at least a list, I could have some idea if the C860 is going to have enough native stuff for me to use.

4) Does anyone have access to an English manual ? ...I have an English PDF \"Quick start guide\", but would really like to have the full manual in English to learn any tricks, etc that are not immediately obvious.

5) Is there a FAQ for the Cacko QT ROM?  I went to Cacko.biz, but it seems to be mostly about X11...could someone post a link to the  CACKO Qtopia FAQ file?

Thanks

Does anyone know how to fix (or replace) Netfront on the C860?

It doesn\'t show frames (or tables?) right when I use My.Yahoo.com and that is my main webpage for news.

It\'s wierd becuase if i flip rotation (auto) it shows the page right (as it must re-layout), but then if I surf off and back it cuts off the first part of all the headlines .

Opera works perfect on my 5500, is there a way to run Opera on the C860?

I don;t mind even any other brower provided it zooms, as my eyes get tired and sometimes I need to zoom while other times it is more important to see the whole web page.

Any help would be appreciated.
