C1000/3x00 Hardware / Nice Case
« on: May 23, 2005, 04:33:13 pm »
Went to Target, and in the school section I found this case for $5.99 USD

Hope the pictures do it justice. It is a snug fit, and I added the velcro to keep it closed but the case adds no bulk so the C1K will still fit in my shirt pocket.

Now if someone could just help me to attach 3 ~29Kb pictures to my this thread....

Thanks,

gdog

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Ok, The Challenge Has Been Made
« on: May 14, 2005, 12:33:52 pm »
Besides most everybody...

We have two keys immediately to the right of the Space bar. I can't even "draw" them for you because, well I'm lame I guess. The challenge is, how do I make the bottom left character of each key "come alive"?

The most important one is the backtick because without it I can't write Perl scripts without using the nasty system calls that I dislike so much. The second isn't so important because frankly I don't need to tell you all to what degree I've accomplished anything. But the first is vital to me, and if someone can help me solve it you will forever be my own personal hero, and if ever we should meet I will buy you a Grande tripleshot latte with the flavoring of your choice.

Please help me, I can't begin writing my new KA, Address Book Replacement program without those vitally important backticks. And besides, it's a matter of National Security.

Thanks,

gdog ;^)

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Keyhelper Helper
« on: May 12, 2005, 08:48:03 pm »
Is there a comprehensive document that explains the key codes and how they can be used in keyhelper?

Barring that, does anyone have a cheat sheet on how to make certain characters through key combinations? Keys such as the backtick for instance. Is the backtick one of the characters available on the key to the immediate right of the space bar? Is so, how do I make it work?

Also, can I use Keyhelper to remap the non-English characters above the keys that are "Normally" made by pressing the Fn key first?  I've learned that Fn + N will make { and Fn + M will make }.

Are there any other cool shortcuts out there? The ones I had for my 6K don't work in all cases.

Thanks so much,

gdog

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Opera For For The Sl-cxxx?
« on: May 09, 2005, 10:31:43 pm »
Is is just me or is Netfront lame in comparison to Opera? Is is possible to add helper apps into Netfront so that, for instance if I click on a link that is a Hancom Word doc it would actually open in Word? Barring that, has anyone seen Opera compiled to run on the C[3|1]K platforms?

Thanks,

gdog

that is available to the general public for the C1K? I know that Dynamism protects theirs, but are there others, besides Conics and Trisoft that might be available and perhaps converts more than the others?

It appears the wizards on this site are a ways away from completing a Cacko or OZ ROM for my soon-to-be-arriving C1000, and since I can't read Japanese, and don't have the patience of Job I'm going to need to at least convert the Sharp ROM to English in the meantime. If anyone has had a great experience with any of the translations, including Conics and Trisoft I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Trade Sl-6000 For C[3][1]000
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:43:07 pm »
If anyone is interested in trading their gently used C 3 or 1 K clamshell for my gently used 6K with an extra battery and very nice case I'd like to talk with you.  I would be willing to pay some extra in order to facilitate a fair deal.

Thanks,

6000 - Tosa / Page Up, Page Down
« on: January 13, 2005, 08:53:40 pm »
By chance I discovered that I can page down using the center button on the dpad, but only in Opera. Anyone know of a way to page down or up in Word or Excel?

Thanks,

6000 - Tosa / Microdrive Activity Light?
« on: December 22, 2004, 01:35:21 pm »
I thought I saw a post awhile back about someone who had written something that would allow one of the built-in LEDs to be used as a harddrive activity light on the 6K. It may have been either the mail or WiFi light. Does anyone else recall that?

I just bought, repartitioned and formatted an Hitachi 4Gb Microdrive and it would be great to have an indicator of drive activity.

Thanks,

Does anyone know if there is a fix to the problem with the Contacts app in 3K's converted to English where it does not correctly alphabetize contacts that are added post-initial synchronization?

Thanks,

C1000/3x00 General discussions / 3k Questions
« on: December 16, 2004, 11:58:55 pm »
I have a 6K which I like very much. But the clamshell form factor is calling me like a siren song from the deep. So I'm considering the 3K. Some questions though if someone would care to share their experiences

Anyone dealt with Dynamism? If so can you share your experience?

Does the HDD on the 3K take some time to spin up? Any idea how long it takes to idle out if in fact it does?

Does it take longer to resume from suspend than it did on previous models, due to the hdd having to be remounted each time?

Anyone added a CF WiFi card? Was it necessary to tweak the kernel?

Are all of the extended ascii characters available via key combos in the keyboard?

Has anyone seen or created a list of key combos it takes to create them? For instance in coding I need the backtick ( ` ) character, but don't see it on the keyboard. And of course the { } \ ^ ~ and ! are also vital to coding. Some I see, others I don't...

Does the keyboard have the sticky shift/CAPs capability?

Is the screen viewable outdoors? Is it "washed out" indoors or out at the highest brightness setting?

The Apps in ROM seem to be the same version as those installed on my 6K. Does anyone know if there are significant differences?

Has anyone installed Perl, SSH or GnuPG on their 3K? How about TreeExplorerQT, Konsole or QPDF?

Is the large port on the back for a serial cable connection, or is it just a diagnostics port?

Does an SD card (memory, not WiFi), stick out past the front of the unit when inserted?

Is there a latch on the display or is it friction/tension that holds it shut?

After being converted to English (and by whom), are there still undisplayable (or boxes) or Japanese characters showing in the PIM and other ROM apps?

Does the unit feel substantial in the hand? This is somewhat subjective, but does it feel like quality, or something less?

Thanks in advance,

gdog

Does the 6K provide good sound as an MP3 player. What codecs does it support?

Thanks,

6000 - Tosa / Fastest Cf Card Used
« on: December 11, 2004, 12:05:09 am »
What's the fastest CF card at 2 or 4Gb that anyone has used successfully in their 6K? Brand, size and speed would be nice. CF is coming down so quickly now. I've seen a lexar 80x 2Gb card for less than $200 at Costco.com. Hard to pass up but I don't want to buy something the kernel can't deal with correctly and consistently.

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / What happened to my topic?
« on: October 21, 2004, 06:42:30 pm »
After posting a topic (SC-3000), and then scanning further down I realized that the subject had already been broached in another thread and it was in fact old news. But is that any reason for my topic to be removed from the list? What gives?

6000 - Tosa / Does Sharp want out?
« on: August 19, 2004, 07:45:23 pm »
What's up with Sharp? The 6000 has been out for almost 6 months and still there's no user support on their website. Do they want this product to fail? In my opinion, whether they "market" it as a corporate mobile tool, or a consumer toy, if they allow it to be purchased by consumers through any number of channels, they owe it to the consumer to provide support. Don't they realize that they set the tone for third party support and development? And that third party support is also stagnated? Or maybe they know that all too well. As it stands this Zaurus may be the last US entry, and never achieve the success of its predecessors, even though it is arguably a better product.

C'mon Sharp. Step up to the plate. Don't force me to go out and buy a competitor's product solely because your support s*cks, just as I'm about to do for a new microwave oven, for the same reason. Are you too big to care, or have you just fallen asleep at the switch?

Just so nobody bothers to say duh, yes I know it's not news that Sharp did not target this particular device toward the consumer. I'm just at a loss to understand why a mega-corporation would expend only enough effort (not to mention R&D), to amount to what is little more than a dalliance on their general ledger. Why bother? I bought my first Sharp device in 1971, a fantastic FM radio that was so far ahead of it's time that I still regret giving it away as a gift.
But as a "Mobile Professional" who bought one of their devices with my own money from a Corporate/Consumer Etailer, PCConnection, I believe I have the right to be miffed that Sharp offers absolutely nothing beyond news reports and product literature on their site in support of one of their products (that they will gladly accept my money for). My bad for not checking first I suppose, but I still think it's fine for me to wag my finger, shake my head, and say shame on you Sharp for doing a half-a**ed job. If you're gonna get in the game, give it 110%. Or stay on the bench and don't waste our time.

Software / Hancom Sheet
« on: August 16, 2004, 06:44:52 pm »
Seems that Hancom Sheet (v 1.6) has a problem opening spreadsheets that are anything more than 50Kb or so. The larger they are the longer it takes, with anything over ~100Kb taking from several minutes to eternity (I gave up after 30 minutes trying to open a 450Kb ss).

Seems that Hancom doesn't even have helpful information about their Embedded apps on their site, or at least I couldn't locate it.

Does anyone have any tips for opening large files? (Splitting them into smaller files in not an acceptable option).
Does anyone know of a site where Hancom might provide tips or support for this?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Hancom Word opens 1Mb+ files in just a few seconds on the same device...

Thanks,

gdog
