6000 - Tosa / How do I mount an ext Cdrom?
« on: October 26, 2004, 03:51:01 pm »

I just bought a used external usb cdrom.  I use an external usb hard drive nightly and it was no problem mounting it using /dev/sda1.  However I cannot figure out what /dev/ the cdrom is in order to mount it.   I figured that it would simply be /dev/sda2 but that does not work at all.  Anybody know?  Surely someone has done this....

Item 2

I have successfully installed a usb external keyboard that is now about 90 percent mapped correctly, but I would REALLY like to be able to use an external mouse.  I had tried the mouse thing on my old 5500 using it as a com device but I never got that going.  However while browsing through the /dev/ folder on my 6000 I noticed that it listed a usbmouse as a device!  I immediately plugged in a usb mouse hoping that it would be as easy as the keyboard (which was darn near plugnplay).  NOPE...not a thing. Is it possible to use an external usb mouse and if so how would you accomplish this?

I belabored whether to put this in General or Software, and decided since I was not having hardware problems and because it was my software that needed modified in order to work I should put it here after all.  MODERATOR- Please if you feel this would be more appropriate elsewhere please forgive the goof and feel free to move it!

Thanks all,

6000 - Tosa / Screen protectors

I went do the download area and downloaded the pdf as you recommended but regardless how I setup the print settings on my HP 1220 LJ it printed about 2mm all the way around smaller than the viewable area was on the screen.  It wasn't a total loss however as it inspired me to keep trying my own hand and found a size myself that did work for me. (I have a terminal case of scissors hand cramp though.) The fault was probably was in my wifes Win2k printer setup as it acts as our home networks print server.

At any rate the end product does NOT float around the screen and has zero dust particles trapped underneath.  It is perfectly responsive to the stylus...seems to actually make tapping easier than before.  If anyone is interested I used a transparency sheet of Office Depot Black and White copier transparancies.  It was the best brand I could find that didn't have noticeable yellow or grey tinting or subtle streaks in the manufacturing finish. It also reduces glare a LOT, not sure if its an anti-glare component or if I was just lucky.  Either way I'm breathing a LOT easier knowing my screen is safe.

* A special thanks to Donna, my sister who aided me in this two hour long struggle - thanks sweets! *

6000 - Tosa / How do I rotate for IRK?

Got it!  Great tips and thanks to you both! I love ZUG.  Better support on these forums alone than Sharp has EVER given for the various Zaurus species!

Thanks Again,

I got mine from Amazon and fell immediately in love. TRUE love!
I was so worried about support and future avaiability that I turned around today and bought a spare batt., sleeve, and a backup 6k to put away in the closet in case I break/brick the first one.  I am now laptop free for the first time in my life and LUVIN' it!

I know 10/100 ethernet cards are much less popular than wireless but this is simply a good deal!  I already owned one of these cards and its run with every ROM I've tried flawlessly and I've been very pleased with its performance (100megabit will spoil you) and the fact that it has 6 led's so you know EXACTLY how your hooked up etc.  They are super nice for traveling and doing the internet thing in Hotels etc.  Looks pretty snazzy to boot.
I found this one at and immediate ordered a second one for my wife.  To my great surprise at checkout time I discovered that ups ground shipping was FREE!

Note: I am in NO WAY a representative of mobileplanet.  I've never even been a customer of theirs before this!

Hope this helps someone!

Software / New Gaming Possibilities brought to us by 3.5.1?
« on: October 07, 2004, 03:22:11 am »
Thats a great question...I had been thinking about that myself.  I pointed it out to my fellow geek at work and he doesn't think that it will matter much.  The new oz has a much faster software fpu than the previous versions ... of OZ.  The stock sharp roms he believes never suffered from this problem as sharp did not have to do any retro engineering.  I believe he's on the right track...on my 5500 prboom played much smoother on the stock roms than it ever did on any previous version of OZ.

That said, I would REALLY like to  be wrong about this!  Free performance is just too tempting a prize.

Somebody let us know or set us straight with the final word.  I'll anxious to see the final verdict.

Sharp ROMs / Sharp 3.13 rom v/s others

You have a valid point with wondering why to change.  I actually take your argument a tad further.  I'm using the original version of Cacko/Crow based on the 1.2 series sharp rom for the same reasons.  EVERYTHING works and works well. Yes, there are the root security issues, but I'm a careful user and have never fragged my OS yet.  I never have to worry about whether it will synchronize with my pc REGARDLESS of my OS, nor do I ever have to worry about new programs being compatible. Since I have an sl-5500 I don't even have to worry about performance- to the contrary many sl-5500 users have problems with qoverclock in v1.3x and taking that into consideration means I can run prboom etc., even FASTER in my old venerable version!

Now-   having said all that....

I also have a SECOND sl-5500 that gets flashed almost weekly.  I tinker an embarrassing amount if the truth be told.  And the blatent truth is I actually enjoy TINKERING with new flashes and programs more than I do using my primary Z workhorse mentioned above! =)

It's the mark of a Linux/alternative OS's almost a sickness at times, but it beats other habits like alcoholism, drug abuse, etc. all to pieces now doesn't it?

The glorious thing about the Zaurus that other companies just don't get is that its all about FREEDOM to choose.  To choose your OS, to choose your programs, to choose to work in dev, or testing, or just to show our accomplishments to our workmates and watch em drool at what we can do with our Z.   (Often putting their brand new 800 buck win based pda to shame with a two year old pda!)

So enjoy the fact that you don't need to reflash to have all the power you need at your beck and call!  But if you ever get that itch to try something new just because you can.... remember its just your fingertips away.

Happy Z'ing!

Software / How is software compatibility with Hybrid 1.6.x?
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:25:16 am »
I'm groping around for another Rom and don't think I'm up for OZ 3.5 yet.  Still too many rough edges for me to knock off.  I'm thinking very hard about  going with the Hybrid rom with Qtopia 1.6

I'm worried about program compatibility however!  I own almost 20 kompany titles, and the ability to run prboom and qoverclock is a must.  I also have a lot of paid for software such ast rocketelite, candycrusher, etc.

Will these programs even begin to install correctly and run on Qtopia 1.6?  Anyone who has run Hybrid please take time to drop me some hints and tips.

My thanks for your time in advance!

Oops forgot some things:
Our family has four Z's all of 'em are sl-5500's
In addition to the above Synch-ing is completely mandatory.  Preferably with MS Outlook. (yah I know that sux but you can lead your wife to Linux but you can't make her drink!)

Strange, I got one of these (just arrived I'm looking at it now) that I ordered a few days ago. Saw it on an email that they sent me, I picked up this and a dvd rw for $49 at the same time.  Makes me wonder if the  sale is longer than just *today*.  Good deal to be had though and my cf card is reading fine in my sl5500.  Go get em folks.

Sharp ROMs / thekompany rom

Ive perused this thread from beginning to end and I'm afraid I'm one of the ones having problems with thier wifi card.  I'm pretty baffled by the problem as I have used my SMC SMC2642W card for over a year and a half with no problems with various versions of early cacko, sharp and even oz.  When I install it it detects it as a dlink 660w and I can enter my settings just fine but the zaurus never even attempts to look for my wireless point.  When I eject the card it again notifies me I have ejected my dlink 660w.  No joy. none.  I'd like to try entering in my network info manually but I have no idea what files are invloved etc.  I REALLY want to try to run this rom!  Someone please take pity on us and give this a bit of a looking into, we'd be VERY grateful.

Kindest Regards,
