SIMpad forum / Alignment Traps In ångström
« on: April 02, 2008, 05:39:34 am »
This seems to be an ARM-related problem, so I guess this affects other ARM platforms as well.
It sounds like this /only/ affects performance.
Fixing this may require non-trivial changes to the source code of the concerned applications.

Are these bad for us?

SIMpad forum / Angstrom Hangs With Soft Lockup

Simply amazing, it boots like a charm! Thanks a lot for the great work. Now I can at least experiment a bit with that Angstrom distribution and the 2.6 kernel.

I still have to test my various PCMCIA cards, but it looks like lots of strange boot messages have been fixed already.

So what's the next challenge? Getting the sound to work? Will we be able to use that old guy as a SIP phone some day?

mr_nice,
If you can't reproduce the bug, is there any way we could help fixing it?

same thing happens with r9, but I also noticed some strange messages in the boot sequence (did I sleep for 30 years and wake up in 2038?):

On a side note, I booted with my CF adaptor plugged in, and I also noticed that message:

Well, I vote for the inclusion of your quick'n'dirty patch in OE while waiting for a better solution, since it block me too (didn't try r9 yet). I don't know how many tested r8 or r9, but at least two of them can't boot.

The strange thing is that I never came across this one with previous releases (the ones where PCMCIA was broken).

The good news is that if I insert my NE2K PCMCIA card before it locks up, the card is properly recognized, so I guess PCMCIA is working again!
Thanks a lot.

SIMpad forum / Angstrom 2007.12 Pcmcia Issue

Dear mr_nice,

I'd be glad to test that image, but its size is 30Mb!!! I guess you hacked your SIMpad by adding more flash space ;-)

I noticed that after flashing and booting, of course...

The root partition by default is only 24Mb, do I need to change this? Or maybe you can make a smaller image? The 17Mb of the X11 angstrom image fits better into my SIMpad (and the CL4 owners will appreciate getting a below-16Mb image too)

Here's my report for the 2007-12.r3 images, dated feb. 6 2008:

Inserting a PCMCIA CF adaptor works,

As of today there is a new unstable at the unstable images.

Anyone tried it?

I just tried the 2007.12-r3 image, and we get the same stuff: only the CF adapter is recognized.

« on: January 17, 2008, 04:37:50 am »
Thanks Berhardt and others, this is very (mr_)nice work!

The main problem right now is with PCMCIA, which prevents any kind of networking:
- a CF card adapter is recognized properly and mounted
- my old ethernet card (Linksys EC2T) which is supported by pcnet_cs and works in Familiar is not recognized when inserted. I only get the message "pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0" in the console. Loading the module pcnet_cs before or after inserting the card doesn't fix that (the module is included in the jffs2 images)
- my WLAN card (prism2-based), which works with hostap on Familiar, isn't recognized either. Incidentally, I noticed that kernel-module-hostap_cs is neither present in the images, nor in the simpad feed, although the hostap utilities are installed...
- "pccardctl ident" only works with the CF card adapter
- shouldn't there be a /proc/bus/pccard directory? (maybe not, but it's here on my linux 2.6.22 workstation)

has anybody got an ethernet or wifi card to work?

bugs.openembedded.org is down at the moment, so I cannot file any bug for these, sorry.

I can't wait for the day when I'll have a working Angstrom tablet with minimo running on it ;-)

Did you try running a VNC server with a 800x600 resolution (or less) on the PC, and a VNC client on the SIMpad?
Even if the client dies, the VNC server stays on with all its applications running.

You can find a VNC client (untested) for Familiar 0.8.4 at:

http://devernay.free.fr/hacks/opensimpad/v....7.1-r0_arm.ipk

SIMpad forum / Synergy On Simpad With Familiar 0.8.4
« on: May 29, 2007, 03:43:16 am »
From the Synergy homepage: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net :
Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

In short, with synergy you can control your handheld with your computer mouse and keyboard...

I patched synergy 1.3.1 to compile on Familiar (which uses diet-x11).
The synergy client was successfully tested on a simpad, but should work on any handheld (please send me some feedback if it doesn't)
http://devernay.free.fr/hacks/opensimpad/v0.8.4/updates/

I have the .bb and patch ready, if any maintainer would like to review these and include them in the Familiar git.

Thanks to Thomas Winkler for testing.

thanks for this update!

I don't know what 2.4's audio code is worth, has anyone ever /heard/ it running?

BlueTooth should work out of the box in 2.6, since it uses the second serial interface.

The SIMpad kernel in Familiar should have bluetooth and MMC support, although I never could test it, since I don't have a modded SIMpad.

The Familiar installation guide for SIMpad is available at:
http://opensimpad.org/index.php/Linux
and
http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/SimPad

Please pick images at:
http://familiar.handhelds.org/releases/v0....ll/files/simpad
(use gpe-image-v0.8.4-simpad-rootfs.jffs2)

(if you select "download" from the familiar homepage, you won't be able to ge these, use the above direct link instead)

I hope you'll manage to get the whole thing working!

cheers,
Fred

SIMpad forum / Familiar Release 0.8.4
« on: November 07, 2006, 03:22:05 am »
FYI, minimo (lightweight version of firefox) is now available in the Familiar feeds.
A good email client is sylpheed, but you should consider using webmail through minimo instead (unless you have lots of flash space).

You will also find a lightweight PDF viewer (epdfview), an updated version of sylpheed, and other stuff in my "updates" feed for Familiar:
http://devernay.free.fr/hacks/opensimpad/v0.8.4/

I tried to put as much information as I could on installing Familiar on the SIMpad in the Familiar wiki:
http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/SimPad
feel free to add more information there

Frederic
