Hi,

I finally got a wifi card working on my zaurus and started playing with firefox

straight away when i came to download something i ran out of space .

its basically because it tries to write files to /tmp !


the way to change that setting is to..

start firefox

in the uri bar type about:config this will bring up the firefox tunables.

in the filter bar bellow type applications.tmp_dir or tmp_dir

it should bring up the setting as follows

application.tmp_dir type string value /tmp
double tap this line and change it to say /hdd3 or where ever you have space (flash drive sdcard).

and away you go , it'll now store all tmp files there before completing the download to the correct directory .

xfaethorx, did you succeed in moving stuff to your hard drive from your /home dir? Let me know if it worked and what you moved/linked.

i think mv does as well, the bottom line is you could move quite a bit of /home safely over to the HDD or SD card as long as the symlinks are maintained. I'm a bit reluctant to mv a directory incase I break something .

Point is you could move /home/ in its entrity to /hdd3 and symlink to it . Sure that will mean the HDD is doing more work than usual and you may consider using an SD card instead as that then means less moving parts, so less performance for your HDD to do.

It isnt that bad, actually it is   This is the situation on the C3000. /home is only 4MB and almost everything lives on the microdrive.

Btw, what is in /hdd1 and /hdd2? I guess only directories and symlinks?

meanie.. I'm not sure but HDD1 and HDD2 look like other partitions either way they only hold the lost+found directories on my C3100..

i guess I'm going to have to do an mv on a bunch of directroies and see what happens !

the HDD is fat so it wont maintain the symlinks you'd have to convert part of or if not all of your drive to compensate for that.

I managed to move some applications over , thunderbird , firefox and abiword but it copies the symlink as a file so it'll make it bigger on the HDD if your bothered.

I did this BEFORE i finally got my hands on mkcramfs.

I've used mkcramfs since to cram the java of blackdown and a few other bits and bats.

I think the best thing for people to do is to look at what your installing, decide wether or not the install directory well NEVER be written to and then

1. cram it if you can and mount it at boot time.

2. if you can't cram it see if you can move it! thing is here if you want proper symlinks convert your HDD , i haven't I need to do more reading before I start breaking shit on here. So the rule of thumb here is you can symlink TO the directory  from say /home to /hdd3 but you CANT put a symlink INSIDE that directory so be careful with what you move! Look at the directory structure before you move it. TBH i did a copy first and symlinked to it, tested ALL functionailty and then completed the "move" by removing the backed up directory!

alas all the links are fubar'ed on that page so I can't track it down. If anyone has a compatible 2.95.2 libc_nonshared then can post or get to me I'd appriciate it!

The error is saying that it cannot find "libc.so" in the path specified by $LIBRARY_PATH. If you are compiling on the Zaurus, you need to create a symbolic link from /lib/libc.so.6 to <path>/libc.so where <path> is in $LIBRARY_PATH. This may have to be done for a number of libraries: libm.so, libpthread.so, libncurses.so, etc.

p. s. If you are using zgcc 2.02, then you are not correctly using zgcc.sh. Say
" . <pathto>/zgcc.sh" before compiling. Note the dot.

I tried to contact you directly in the past to report a problem with the way libc is configured in zgcc but I think it may not have reached you. There are standard libc functions not implemented in the shared library, usually the ones a user will notice are the stat related functions. libc.so should not be a simple symbolic link to /lib/libc.so.6 but rather should be a file containing something like the following:

GROUP ( /lib/libc.so.6 /usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a )zgcc has worked beautifully for me on many many packages after installing libc_nonshared.a and making this change to the way zgcc was configured. I did run into this problem repeatedly when there was simply a symbolic link in place.

i have a c3100 and i've encountered the same problem but I can't find libc_nonshared.a anywhere (its certainly not on the device or any feeds i've tried) ? can someone post it up? I'm runnin 2.95.2

Hi,

 Problems yet again for me . I've managed to get Java installed on my Zaurus and I turned my focus to gcc , everything is mounted properly but when I go to compile a test application I get cannot find -lc.

I did some digging on this and found out that this is because of not having the static library to link to.

The solution is to use libc_nonshared.a in a file called libc.so as follows

Group(/path/libc.so /path/libc_nonshared.a);

thing is I can't find libc_nonshared.a on my device, so I'm assuming its a download from elsewhere and unfortunately I can't seem to find it!

Can anyone help here? does anyone have what I'm looking for?

that sucks major donkey dick! Especially because I've used your site to pretty much get to gribs with the Zaurus! Hope you manage to get it working again , if not stick a paypal dontations link up on your site I'm sure people would contribute to your site seeing as its loaded with useful info on Zaurus stuff...might be able to get some money for a new one . Either that or get Sharp to send you a freebie for supporting their device so well!

Hi I was given a SanDisk SDWCFB-128-768 card, its the compact flash card with the 128 Meg onboard. I've had a look around but it only seems to suggest that the card works on OpenZaurus.

Does it work with the stock rom or do you have to do some monking around as I inserted it into the zaurus and it doesn't work.

Point is you could move /home/ in its entrity to /hdd3 and symlink to it . Sure that will mean the HDD is doing more work than usual and you may consider using an SD card instead as that then means less moving parts, so less performance for your HDD to do.

right i've got it working!

heres the versions of things you need to get it to work (or at lesat this is what I've used to get mp3s to successfully play via xmms.

xmms_1.2.10_armv5tel.ipk
xmms-mad_0.5.6-1_arm.ipk
libid3tag_0.15.1b_armv5tel.ipk
libmad_0.14-2b-1_arm.ipk

theses are the files I used, you might have to copy libxmmsmad.so from /home/QtPalmtop/lib/xmms/Input to /home/root/lib/xmms/Input but once you've done that it'll work!

I've successfully played a bunch of MP3s through it .

I think its the supporting .so libs. Either the output library or the mp3 decoder theres alterantives but i've not managed to get them to work so as of now I've given up for the moment.

libmad MIGHT be the solution but i've had no luck getting xmms to work with it properly.

is there a replacement for th cp command that supports the copying of symbolic links as the default one DOESNT if we can find one we can successfully copy all the home directories to larger storage and just simlink to it!
