What is wrong with the standard ROM? Why does everyone think they have to flash their Zaurus? Is there something I am missing? I am asking as a newbie since I never had a PDA before my Zaurus. Is this flashing thing a PDA initiation ritual that I don't know about?

For me the biggest problem with the original rom is that it uses Qtopia. And when you open a file in a Qtopia app it tends to want to scan all your storage area, so in the case of a 3100 (which I have) it's going to go through my 512MB SD, 512MB CF and 4GB HDD. something that takes minutes.

yes, but using ntp needs to connect to internet and i'm not always connected to the web...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102819\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

You don't /need/ to use ntp. And as per the instructions you don't even need ntpdate either (just use the date command (or whatever those instructions said) to set the clock initially.

After following those instructions my 3100 has been keeping the correct time (to the second) even through reboots. Just to be clear, after you've set the time correctly then there is "no need" to run ntp or ntpdate. By "no need" I mean no need to run it constantly. You may want to run it once a month or something to to correct any minor drifts. FWIW I've been running rc12 for nearly a week now and the time is still accurate to the second (as far as my eye can tell). With the Sharp rom I was losing a couple minutes per reboot!

Now that the hostap modules are available for rc12 (thanks agraef), pdaxrom (thanks sashz, Laze, et al) is a useable alternative to the dreaded Qtopia. Actually Qtopia isn't that bad, it's just that the way it implements the open file dialog is seriously outdated and was driving me insane

What is the "official"/definitive method of accessing the service menu?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

OK I've got it now. The instructions here seemed clearest:

[a href=\"http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/service-menus/]http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-.../service-menus/[/url]

In my case I kept the D & M buttons pressed and as soon as I inserted the battery the service menu appeared.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Hardware problems with pdaXrom..

anyway, back on topic... i have the ambicom wl1100c-cf wireless card... it works very sporadically in pdaXrom, although always worked perfectly in the others... what am i missing?  it has worked for me a couple times, but even then droped and reconnected quite a bit.  Other times, i can't even get it to connect to my network.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'm using the same card on a C3100. It seems to die after a certain amount of activity. IE if I have it connected but leave the connection idle all is well -- but not very useful

When I start downloading files or browsing the web etc, then after a random number of bytes (or number of seconds?) the connection dies and I start getting these errors on dmesg:

Code: [Select]
eth0: Error -110 writing Tx descriptor to BAP
When this happens the following usually brings the card back up:

Code: [Select]
cardctl eject 0
cardctl insert 0

And I have to keep doing this everytime the connection dies

I have also tried using the hostap driver as per this post:

[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7151&st=0&p=44759&#entry44759]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...759&#entry44759[/url]

But evidently the hostap drive isn't available because I get this error:

Code: [Select]
module /lib/modules/2.4.20/pcmcia/hostap_cs.o not available

This is the major stumbling block which prevents me from using pdaXrom. Any help appreciated

(BTW please someone, update the instructions here http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=42&menuid=11 so that C3100 owners are warned about the consequences of changing the bootloader!)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=99520\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Strange, after reading more of the forum it appears that the bootloader bug was fixed in/by rc11. Nevertheless, I'm unable to access the D+M service menu.

you are removeing the battery and power before pressing d+m right?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yep. In fact I've tried 3 different  procedures -- the 2 outlined here:

[a href=\"http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3100howto.htm]http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3100howto.htm[/url]

And the seemingly simpler method on page 30 of TriSoft's quick start guide.  The 3 procedures are detailed below:

Quote
1) Power down the Zaurus and remove all power sources (no AC adaptor and remove the battery!). Set the battery switch to the "Offen" position and wait for at least 5 seconds. Then connect the AC adaptor and put back the battery. Hold down the [D] and [M] keys and set the battery switch back to "Betrieb" (while keys are pressed!). After a short moment the diagnostics menu should appear.

No service menu, boots into pdaXrom.

Quote
2) If not, try it again and this time hold down the [D] and [M] keys before you restore the power (AC adaptor / battery).

This procedure was tricky, how do you keep the D+M keys pressed whilst inserting the battery and plugging in the AC power? Anyway I tried it a few times and I think I managed it, but still no service  menu

Quote
3) Set the battery switch to "Offen" and wait a couple of seconds. Connect the Zaurus to a power source (USB cable or power supply), hold down the keys "D" and "M" and switch back to "Betrieb"

Now this one doesn't explicitly say remove the battery, if this is correct, it would be a easiest to perform. But still I couldn't get the service menu.

Sorry if this sounds stupid -- in all 3 methods it doesn't explicitly say you have to press the on/off button (as a last step) -- I'm assuming that you do because if it wasn't pressed then nothing happens.

What is the "official"/definitive method of accessing the service menu?

thanks

[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thank you for making a promising rom. However after trying rc11 and briefly rc12 on my C3100 I wanted to go back to the Sharp rom and got hit by this bootloader problem!

Could someone please clarify what the above isntructions do?

Basically I want to go back to the Sharp rom. I've downloaded the NAND backup from TriSoft, but I can't into the service menu (D+M). So I followed the above instructions, but I still can't get into the D+M menu, I keep booting back into pdaXrom when I switch the machine on.

I'm new to all this, this is my first Zaurus and I've only had it a couple of days, so if someone could kindly instruct me how to restore the Sharp rom I would be very grateful

(BTW please someone, update the instructions here [a href=\"http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=42&menuid=11]http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=42&menuid=11[/url] so that C3100 owners are warned about the consequences of changing the bootloader!)
