2.4.20 Kernel On Non Sl-c3000 ?
« on: January 30, 2005, 01:16:00 pm »
Has anyone got any idea if Sharp are ever going to relase 2.4.20 for the other models in the form of an upgrade ?

Since the binary modules such as the SD card driver appear to be non GPL (read the kernel source page) I suspect that this is the only legitimate way of getting 2.4.20 onto the other models (if you want the binary modules at all that is..).

I just build squashfs2.1r2 for the SL-C3000 and am waiting for someone that has a 3000 to PM me if they want to test and noticed that the Kernel source for the 3000 actually ships with boxer-j def-config files so I suspect plans are afoot to bring the 2.4.20 kernel to the other units. Anyone got a clearer picture of what's going on ?

Sharp's 2.4.20 kernel is a pice of junk, their patches don;t even produce valid kernel images for device sother than C3000. I've tried to buod, a 2.4.20 kernel for C750 and it just wound't boot.

Interesting, I wonder if they hacked all the corgi, poodle and husky stuff just to meet the SL-C3000 hardware without thinking of combining the source tree with the other models.

Forget 2.4 - it's dead. Join the OZ kernel developers and help us to finish our 2.6 support for more machines - cooperative with mainline.

I'm all for getting 2.6 Kernel up and running Mickey but as has been said before 2.4.x is generally good enough for the Z and unless someone either reverse engineers or writes a module stub for the sd card drivers then the devices are going to be somewhat limited.

I can see problems with both approaches. Reverse engineering of the drivers must contravene the Sharp license, nobody in the mainstream 2.6 community is going to accept a patch to run 2.4.18 kernel modules into the 2.6 Kernel tree...

Any other ideas ?

I don't know which Zaurus you have, but our OZ Kernel 2.6 for C7x0 already contains a great working fast open source driver for the SD card

And - believe it or not - it is soon getting incorporated into mainline.

OOH, cool, I've got an SL-C860, is there a status for 2.6 on the Wiki anywhere yet ? haven't found one to date - all seemed to be list based the last time I checked.

Fantastic!!
A working 2.6 is the critical element in making an independent os with a real future. Let us know when you get it running on your 6000
