Are There Different English Translations?
« on: February 16, 2005, 11:43:15 am »
Still on the fence about buying a Zaurus C3000, but I reaaaalllly want one.

What I am trying to determine is if there is a difference in the english translations offered by the different retailers, and what I can do myself using the readily available instructions.

Can anyone provide input on this? Dynamism claims they do ALOT more than anyone else.

Thanks
Chris

The first post here comments on Dynamism https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=53973

I hope this helps.

The companies don't actually do any translating themselves; most of the default Zaurus programs already contain English strings. Instead, the companies basically just change some settings to force the English strings to be displayed instead of the Japanese.

This can all be done by yourself as well (or by using one of the available scripts, such as Stubear's).

Thanks for the replies, that's what I thought.

Funny though is when I called Dynamism today, the rep on the phone
tried to convince me that they do something I can't do.

You mean "untranslate". Default language in Qtopia is English. There is no 'translate to English' in Qtopia.

To "untranslate", all you need to do is edit the locale.conf in ~/Settings and change Language to en_US, and then from commandline, run
qcop 'QPE/System' 'language(QString)' 'en_US'
Probably need to add an English inputmethod.
