Shepherd Login And Getting Out Of Terminal
« on: February 12, 2005, 07:49:55 pm »
Hi,

I just go my c860 with OpenZaurus installed and I'm new to Linux, but willing to learn. when I get into the terminal from Opie, I'm asked for a shepherd login and password. I don't have one. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do at that point?

I type root, but then I don't know how to get back to Opie.  When I restart the Zaurus, it reopens with the terminal screen.  If I remove the battery cover and restart Opie reappears, but otherwise I don't know how to get out of the Terminal.

i dont have the same Z as you, but if the directory structure is the same, then this should work for ya:

Code: [Select]
cd /
/etc/init.d/opie start

as far as the login thing goes, try "root" with no password or with password "rootme"
then, i would open your package manager and remove opie-login

hope this helps

shepherd is probably the machine name.

Iinitially there's no password, so use user:root; pass:<blank>.

You say when you get into the terminal from opie... I assume you mean you've quit Opie and are at a fullscreen terminal.

In this case run '/etc/init.d/opie start' to get back.

Are you using the Opie menu to get your terminal? If so thats switching to a Virtual Terminal that's not running opie which could be your problem, Once you get a prompt you should be able to use chvt to switch back to Opie.

If you wish to just have a terminal inside of Opie there is one in the Applications tab that will not cause your Z to exit the GUI.

Thanks. "etc/init.d/opie start" worked. "chvt" did not get me back into opie.

When I go to Terminal from Opie, what do the numbers 1 through 9 stand for? Are those different sessions that I've already got running?  So far it seems that Opie gets hung up easily. I often see more than one icon selected on the desktop.  Is that because I'm trying to move around faster than it can keep up with me? I'm hoping there's a better explanation.
