Tiger And The Z

This is mostly directed at dhns, I suppose, as he seems to be the one most actively developing a sync solution for the Z.

Now that Apple has opened up the iSync API a bit in Tiger, is there any chance of seeing, say, my SL-6000 pop up in the iSync device menu? I really, really want to press one button and have my Z sync down to the last detail with iCal and Address Book (maybe Stickies too), bypassing Qtopia Desktop alotgether.

Of course, it would be really great to see the KDE/Pim suite supported directly -- perhaps even instead of Sharp's DTM, as you can actually work with the KDE/Pim developers, and most every Z user has by now switched to this much more full-featured PIM suite.

Whaddaya say? Is there any hope for this? Am I the only one who isn't happy with the existing options?

The Zaurus Synchronization Repository is an active project with an OS X port.

It seems like Apple should've made this possible, but my first pass at the developer's documentation left me looking for more, or at least an example.  Seems like they ought to have a nice wrapper for adding a new device to iSync along with docs on how to do this, but I didn't find it on a first pass.  I just haven't had a lot of time to look at the docs.

I haven't switched, and I really wouldn't have any interest in this.  To each their own though.

In an ideal world, we'd have one or even two really active open source projects going on for this, but reality is, that it's a couple developers with projects putting in whatever time they have.  I'd like to help out with the Zaurus Synchronization Repository project, but I just don't think I have any time for that at the moment.

Probably no. What Apple has opened is the Synchronization framework (part of Core Data) which is used as the inner logic of iSync. The iSync application still has its own closed plugin (conduit) architecture.

A new release of ZMacSync I am working on will directly use the new Sync.framework to get its data. And it will have just a single Sync button. I have it already working for pushing some contact and event data to the Zaurus (well, again restricted to the Sharp ROM/Cacko with DTM PIM) but it has not been tested enough to publish anything and the direction Z->Mac is a little more complex since it may destroy data on the Mac.

Syncing of Stickies is not natively supported by Apple - but I have an idea how to solve (but on lower priority).

It is a matter of available time (and effort) digging into and making the sync framework work for ZMacSync.

PS: I have decided to keep the shareware key the same (although ZMacSync will become version 2.0) so all those who have already supported ZMacSync-1.5 can use the 2.0 upgrade when it becomes available. Thanks!
