Os 10.3.9 Crashes Very Often At Logout/shutdown
« on: May 23, 2005, 01:32:00 am »
Hi everybody,

since I often try to connect my Zaurus SL 5500 (SharpROM 3.13 + Cacko Kernel Patch) with my PowerBook G4, I have a lot of problems with Kernel Panics when I try to log off, shutdown or restart my PowerBook.

I recently updated to MacOS 10.3.9 with all Security Updates..

Does anyone have similar problems?

Do I really have to kick the USB cradle and buy a CF-(W)LAN-card to avoid those problems?
(There are 2 reasons why I'm hesitating:
Firstly, I couldn't use my 512 MB CF memory card while beeing connected to the network.
Secondly, I would have to buy both, because a WLAN card is great when beeing "on the way", but at work - for example - the only possible way to connect to the network is (wired) LAN.

Best regards

Martin

I can say that I'm *not* having these problems on 10.3.9 (with a 6000), so it might be limited to your specific configuration. I'm connecting via cradle routinely.

There's a new USB driver (v.3) provided by DHNS, who's on the Mac forums quite often. It was supposed to provide functionality with Tiger, but some users have kept v.28 through their Tiger upgrade without any problems.

You also might try running TechTool to clean up the system. That might resolve conflicts if there are any. It's worked countless times for me.

Hi eji,

thanks for your answer. Do you have a certain "routine" for disconnecting the cradle before shutting down the ibook or anything like that. It seems to me that this might be the problem...

Unfortunately, I don't have a license for TechTool - I just repaired the System after the crashes (booting with Command-S -> fsck -fy and repairing the filesystem with DiskWarrior).

I read about the new USB driver, but it seems to be only working with OS 10.4 and not with the versions before, so I didn't try it yet but I'm still using the old version 0.28.

Best regards

Martin

Can't say that I do. I just go to the Apple menu, click "Shut Down...", and it shuts down. No kernel panics or anything, and the cradle is almost always connected via USB.

One other thing you could try is uninstalling the driver and then re-installing it, repairing permissions both times.

I hate to sound like the patronizing tech support guy who suggests solutions you've already tried, but sometimes it's possible to overlook the basics.

Hmm, I'll try to reinstall the driver...

.. and on my opinion your comment does not sound patronizing to me at all.
I've asked a question and hoping for helpful comments. You don't know me and I haven't explained in detail everything I've already tried. (In fact I'm not sure myself what I've tried and what I haven't tried yet.)

So I'd always prefer an "unnecessary" hint before an unspoken one. :-)

I never had such problems before - maybe I have to reinstall MacOS X, but honestly I'm not really loving this idea...

Gruß

The problem was the System Preference Pane "Little Snitch", which was not activated but still installed (I had tested a trial version and forgotten to uninstall it).

Since I have uninstalled Little Snitch, there are no more Kernel Panics at shutdown.

:-)
