Japanese Ime On Openzaurus? Cacko Rom Only?
« on: May 30, 2005, 08:10:36 am »
I had a bike wreck and broke my Palm Tungsten E,  so now i am trying to migrate everything over to  the Zaurus. I have a B500 (5600 equivalent) with the Sharp 1.5JP ROM on it now. Does anyone know if I can flash this to OpenZaurus 3.5.3 and get Japanese IME ability (not just *reading* Japanese, but also *entering* Japanese)? The Cacko ROM is the only one mentioning this ability,
http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko-jp-howto.html
but the Cacko ROM is Sharp-based and runs only on the 7XX/860 line.

Thank you.

PS I want to use the Zaurus for Japanese study, networking/hacking, and notes/PDA stuff

The Japanese IME's I know of for Qtopia are anthy and nunome.  AFAIK, neither of these is in OpenEmbedded, and I've already asked about using IME's compiled for Sharp ROM's on OZ.  The answer was that the sharp-compat-libs only works with binary executables, where all input methods exist as dynamic libraries.  So, the answer to your question is that until someone gets around to adding one of the above to OE, or compiles it themselves for OZ, there won't be any Japanese IME's available.  I may attempt to do the latter (compile nunome for OZ) once I get KDevelop up and running.

Thanks for the reply, acpkendo. I have this thread set for auto-notification of replies, but it's not working right.

Anyway, this reminds me of something I had read about two years ago. Some people had been encouraging Sharp to release their IME as open source. Would this make everything easier -- compiling an IME for OpenZaurus? There is not much discussion of this topic as it relates to OpenZaurus. I guess that most people who want Japanese abilty stay with the Sharp ROMs, and those wanting to hack don't mind ditching the IME.

Yes, my impression is that most people who want a Japanese IME stay with Sharp's ROM's.  I think that IME is the best HWR system I've used on any device, but since Sharp is still selling Zauruii in Japan, I'd say there's little to no chance of them opening the source for it.

That said, the source for Qtopia 1.5 apps is supposed to compile cleanly against Opie headers. . . I'll likely give it a try at some point, although I'll admit that if any modification is necessary I won't be able to do it (I don't know C++).
