Finding The Right Settings And Feeds ...
« on: September 28, 2005, 02:25:19 am »
Hi,

I just flashed my C860 to OZ-GPE.
I used the kernel located in the 3.5.3 official unstable release (openzaurus.org)

Then I added "machine" to the feeds as well as "http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/feed/" as this last one holds about all the packages I'd like to try. I called this last one "upgrades", or can I call it anything I like ?

I used "ipkg install" to install a few apps (kopi, kapi, gpe-filemanager, xfce4-panel, xfwm4). I didn't get any error messages.
I can't start any of these.

Kopi and kapi are "not found"
The others give me messages about missing libs.

Where did I go wrong ?

edit :
trying to logout : black screen with cross
trying hard reboot (battery out) : nothing

I'll have to reflash anyway. (fifth time since I started trying)

Could somebody please give me the right steps ?

Chero.

That's the hardfloat feed, try [a href=\"http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/sfeed/]http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/sfeed/[/url] (note the extra 's') instead.

To explain a bit, OpenZaurus is compiled with softfloat enabled, while familiar (for iPAQs) was compiled with hardfloat - both of these distros (and opensimpad) are now merged in all but name (and that's coming), but this hard-float feed is there for familiar users who haven't flashed a softfloat based image.

That about right Koen?

Ok, that explains why it was a no go.

So, about the steps I should follow :

If I put the "machine feed" and the "feed with s" in /etc/ipkg.conf, is that enough ?
Or should I put all the feeds in it listed in .../3.5.3/feed/ ?

How should I call the "feed with s" ?

BTW : I tried ipkg upgrade with the "feed with s", even with the busybox workaround, but it was also a no go.

Does this also mean that xfce4 isn't available for my c860 ?

Familiar will continue a a kind of 'debian stable', but your description covers most of it

Thanks for the background info, but it leaves most of my questions unanswered.

I reflashed, put the machine feed and the "softfloat-feed" (called "upgrades") in my ipkg.conf.
ipkg -force-depends -force-overwrite made it possible to install gpe-filemanager, abiword and gnumeric.
(I got started)
Gnumeric seems to be less buggy than on the other rom.

New questions and issues :
- are kopi, kapi and portabase available for OZ-GPE ?
- my 1Gb SD-card is not recognized by OZ-GPE (it is by that other X-based rom). Can I fix this ? (My 256Mb card is recognized)

I did some searching, but didn't find real answers (except : "buy a new one"). But if the other rom can recognize it, I guess it's an OZ-problem ?

I take it you're running with the 2.6.x kernel?

Try ejecting the card, then re-inserting it, then wait a few seconds and see if it appears. If not, the output of dmesg might be useful.

No, its the 2.4 kernel.
I tried the 2.6 kernel before, my wifi card didn't work. I thought I'd stick to 2.4 until I get to know the system.

I'll put dmesg output here as soon as I get home
I remember seeing a message in it about "EXT2-FS with unsupported optional features." (or something like that).

I'm sure this rom is gonna make it, but at the time of this writing, it lacks to many apps I really use daily. (kopi - kapi - portabase)

That's only 3 apps. Are these available on pdaXrom? If so (and even if not) why not add them to the OE metadata?

So really you should change your statement - you're moving because it doesn't have these three apps which you use, not because it lacks end-user apps in general...

kdepim is available for OPIE, isn't it?

Yes, and hrw is looking at adding the X11 version even as I type.

Quote
Making these apps available, made the number of users go up. It's just a fact.

Yep, I understand and quite agree.

Quote
The only questions I have is : Why didn't anybody tell me that kopi etc weren't available after I first posted? Why didn't I get clear answers to my questions? Why didn't anybody tell me to put it in the metadata after my first post ? If you're new to this rom, it's hard to figure out how things work, what has to be used, ... .

You said you'd installed them, I therefore assumed that they were available in the feed.

In fact both koen and I were taking about only small parts of your post (he was saying that you needed to change feeds, and I chipped in and was also posting about about the SD card not being detected), sorry about that.

Quote
put the apps that a lot of people use in the basic "initrd.bin" and you'll get more users.

Yes. What do people want though? Perhaps I should start a separate thread for this.

Quote
I didn't say that OZ-GPE, or OZ in general isn't a good rom (as you wrote in another thread that's supposed to be about debian). And I didn't say this because I think IT IS A GOOD ROM. I just wanted to give a tip : put the apps that a lot of people use in the basic "initrd.bin" and you'll get more users.

No worries, that other thread just annoyed me. Sorry if it my annoyance spilled over into this one.

Just deleted some of my posts here, to avoid being misunderstood.

I hope now we can start from scratch again and try to keep a positive approach.

Where will this be added when it's finished ?
Do I have to look in the feeds on www.openzaurus.org, or somewhere else ?

Thanks for the info,

Once he's added it, (you can see changes to the OE metadata here: http://cia.navi.cx/stats/project/openembedded), you should ask hrw in the pinned upgrades thread in OZ/Common.

It will then appear in the upgrades feed.
