Cako 3000 Flash On A 3100
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:12:52 pm »
Just ordered my 3100.

I was thinking a nice strategy might be to use the Cako ROM for the 3000 and use the extra flash for a big/fast swap file.

Is this possible?
Is it dangerous?

Thanks,

Chris

I imagine it is possible. The trade off is that instead of loading apps from local flash, apps are going to be on udrive which is slower and uses more battery. However, swapping might be faster  (writing to flash tends to be much slower than reading), and will use less power.

Benefits would depend on your usage. If you tend to use one app for a long time, you'd save battery as the udrive could sleep.  If you use lots of different apps, the udrive will get used more than flash. If you swap a lot, you'll gain speed.

Personally, I don't like the idea of over-using the flash on my Z and try and keep transient files on the SD memory card. I'd not be miserable if the SD card "wore out"! If I had a 3100 I'd
a) use the cacko ROM for 1000 image
replace internal microdrive with bluetooth card or wlan card
c) fit the biggest SD card I could (2G when available), and use the CF slot for flash or GPS or wlan or bluetooth etc.

You don't want to use the flash as an extra swap-drive. Flash memory is limited in the number of times ik can be written. I know that with current flash this limitation is considerably different ( more writes possible). But stil i would not recommend it. In this case there is another reason why I would not recommend it. If the flash dies, you will have to repair the device, otherwise you cannot work with it (flash chip allso carries OS and diagnostics.

You could use extra flash for an extra home dir because write actions there tend to be less.

Thank you for the advice.  I wasn't sure about the write limitations.  I'm just looking for a way to increase available memory.

I'm a UNIX admin and long time linux person.  I'm just looking for a good starting place.  The documentation here is fantastic.

Perhaps I'll start with the C1000 Cako flash and open up the whole microdrive for storage.
