Noob can flash everything except tkcROM
« on: January 27, 2004, 05:24:51 pm »
I\'ve registered but haven\'t received my password yet and I can\'t wait to ask my question!

I\'ve just gotten a C860 and I\'ve already tried Cacko QT, Cacko X11 and OZ 3.3.6pre1. The only other one I really want to try is tkcROM.

Here\'s what I\'ve done:

Starting from a working install of Cacko QT, I flashed

initrd.bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 using the updater.sh-slc860. The files were renamed to initrd.bin and updater.sh, respectively. I read on a message here to use the 7x0 version instead of the c860 one.

The flash reported that it was successful and rebooted. My Zaurus then sits forever at the white Sharp logo screen.

I then tried flashing the user rom. Same result.

Then, tried flashing the javab0y kernel so I could see the boot messages. After rebooting, it said :

/sbin/launch : launch.conf not found
ERROR: /usr/sharp/etc/launch.conf -- can not open file
ERROR: launch.conf -- can not open file

...repeated several times, followed by:

INIT: Id \"ln\" respawning too fast; disabled for 5 minutes

Tried searching here, externe.net and google with no joy. CF card is formatted FAT16 and has been used to install other ROM\'s successfully.

What am I missing?

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

I had the same problem. If you don\'t format your user flash after the tkcRom flash it won\'t boot. These instructions helped me:

****  from ZUG somewhere (I think) *****
Make sure you have the updater.sh and initrd.bin files in the root of your cf/sd card.
(Yes, you can use either cf or sd to flash now!)
Make sure the Zaurus isn\'t plugged into AC power.
Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
Press and hold the \"OK\" button on the keyboard.
Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu:

Now Plug in the Power Cord.
(You will get an error if it isn\'t plugged in!)
Select option 4 (flash/update).
You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. ?? it\'s in Japanese!)
Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.
Select Yes in the confirmation window (left option with the \"Y\").
( If you don\'t get a Yes/No choice you don\'t have the Power Plugged in!)
Screen will go black for a couple seconds, you\'ll then get the Sharp
splash screen (Sharp logo in red, Japanese characters below).
Then the screen will go black, and display
\"--- Zaurus CF updater ---\" and you can monitor the progress.
It will finish, and reboot your Z automatically.
After reboot, turn off your Z and proceed with the Format Internal Flash instructions.

Format Internal Flash

Perform steps 1 - 7 above (to get to the service menu):

Select option 3 (Erase all / Format (all data will be lost!))
You should then get a confirmation message (in Japanese) with a Yes/No
option (left one is Yes). Click the Yes button to confirm.
(If you don\'t get this, then you don\'t have the AC power plugged in.)
*************

Greetings

Fabian

Thanks for your reply, Fabian! I\'m the original poster.

I was successful after doing a NAND restore and then following your instructions. I had tried doing the very same procedures with no luck but the NAND restore seems to have done the trick.

So far, I\'m liking tkcROM best of all so I\'m glad I stuck with getting it installed.

Best regards,
Kieran
