Installing Kanji Nirvana (and Other Sw) On Oz
« on: August 10, 2005, 05:50:31 am »
Hello everybody.

I have a Zaurus 5500, and have used OZ in the past, and was able to install software without great problems.

I haven't been using it for a long while, so I updated OZ to the latest version.

I wanted to get back using the Zaurus mainly because I needed a Japanese characters (kanji) recognizion software at hand, and I had already tried and liked kani.

Problem is that I am not able to correctly install new packages with the new release of OZ. Back in the days all I had to do is copy the packages I wanted to install on the CF, click on them, and the graphical install utility would start and install the package.

Alternatively, I would start the package utility, it would list the uninstalled packages I had in my CF and then select and install the ones I wanted to.

Now nothing seems to happen.

Can anyone help me? Thanks.

I gave some other tries.

I tried installing kani with ipgk on console.

It exited saying that some dependencies (qpe-base) were unresolved.

So i tried a "force depends" installation and went through the end.

Unfortunately, the app doesn't work. If I start it by console (the icon I expected didn't show up in the application tab like it used to) it crashes because of "undefined symbols: _20t.crossCursor" which I think is related to the fact thata the package kani depends on REALLY is important.

Can anybody help me?

qpe-base will appear to be unresolved as opie-base contains the same functionality. You can safely ignore this warning.

To make the icons appear you need to restart opie (not reboot, use the shutdown applet), or (depending on your version of opie) press the 'reload icons' icon on the Settings page.

I'm not exactly sure about the undefined symbol itself, it's not the usual one which appears (though I have seen mention of others) when you've not installed and run the sharp-compat-libs package on your app.

Download & install it from the feed (might be in upgrades, not sure), then refresh the icons, then run it and select the app you've installed.

If you need more info then try a search for "compat libs",

Thank you very much.

I didn't know of the "sharp-compat-libs" thing. It didn't exist the last time I flashed OZ... guess more time than I though passed since!

Anyway, I'll try as soon as I can (getting the 3.10 Sharp ROM back make everything work. since I really NEED that application now I won't risk messing things up right now).

One more question: does the sharp-compat-libs package make me able to install the Hancom applications on OZ 3.5? I have the "hancom*1.5.0.ipk" files that came with the 3.10 rom.

They are the other applications I really need to be productive with my Z.

Actually, any other set of applications that makes me able to open and edit Excel/Word/PowerPoint would do.

Even the OpenOffice equivalents would do, I can do the conversions to MS formats with my PC later.

Thank you in advance again.

You can install the Hancom apps which came with the Sharp 2.xx ROMs, the ones which came with the 3.xx ROMs are troublesome to get running.

Hancom Word appears to run, but Hancom Sheet doesn't work correctly - the numbers don't display correctly due to our change to soft-float.

Another option is to use gnumeric, etc., either inside XQt or by flashing OZ with the GPE GUI.
