Does The Latest Tetsu Kernel Break Anything
« on: November 28, 2005, 02:39:24 am »
I'm curious about what all the fuss is concerning Tetsu's kernel. I've searched till my fingers warped but about all I can truly understand is that Tetsu's kernel allows the C3100 to be over/underclocked. I've translated the Tetsu page with every translater I know of and it still doesn't make much sence to me. Japanese just doesn't translate well at all with the auto-translaters.

Does the latest Tetsu kernel release break anything with the latest Cacko?

Does the Tetsu kernel work with pdaXrom? If so does it break anything there?

What benefits are there other than the over/underclocking capability?

Does pdaXrom or Cacko offer any over/underclocking at all whatsoever right now?

Thanks all, I'm veeeeery slowly coming up to speed on C3100 specific issues.

I think the Tetsu kernel ( which is by the way included in the Cacko rom)
- fixes the battery level indicator ( the Sharp one is not very reliable)
- allows overclocking (as you already pointed out)
- has a couple of optimizations for video playback
- and probably more ( there are various threads on this forum discussing what it does...)
Zaurus C-3100 from PriceJapan with OZ 3.5.4.1. Opie and GPE
Ambicom CF WL1100C Wifi Card and Symbol Wireless Networker CF Wifi Card
1 GB Sandisk Ultra II SD
PdAir leather case - Nintendo DS metal case
various smaller CF and SD cards
all kinds of USB cables and accessories

Previous computers: TI 99/4A, ZX81, C64, Amiga 500, Apple Powerbook 100
Previous PDA's: Palm 1000, Palm III, Palm V, Palm Vx, Audiovox Maestro Pocket PC, Psion 5mx
Current PDA: Palm Tungsten E2
Current favourite: Zaurus C3100 - my "micro laptop"

No, I think it's included in the Cacko release (it is in the latest C3000 beta version by Iamasmith anyway).

The top of Tetsu's page, although not quite easy to decipher, gives plenty of hints about what's been fixed/improved in Tetsu's kernel, for instance on the C3100:

Patch 01: under/overclocking
Patch 02: voltage adjustment (useful for overclocking, I think)
Patch 03: patch for SIGSTOP problem
Patch 04: UNICON patch?
Patch 05: patch to allow variable pressure on the digitizer (useful for drawing applications)
... et caetera.

So it's not just for overclockers, it's more or less the 'state-of-the-art', optimized kernel on Zaurus platforms. Of course, since the patches are freely availables, you can also build your own kernel with every option you like!

Can't say for pdaXrom, as it was not yet mature enough to be usable on my C3000 last time I tried to have a look, but the Cacko ROM has an applet to handle under/overclocking, as far as I can remember, though I don't think it was included in the stock ROM. A forum search should give you more details, there's been a thread on this in the past, I think the overclocking part was included in the battery/memory applet.

Very Cool.  And the fact that it's already a part of Cacko makes it a sure winner.

Those links are the best thing that's happened to me all day today- thanks for putting them up!

See you folks later, need to go read through those threads while I'm still thinking about it....
