My C1000 is due to arrive in a few days. I've got many PDA's: an original OZ-Wizard, the first Sharp PDA, a Newton MessagePad besides all the Palm, CE/PocketPC devices as well.

1)I am curious what other software people have installed on their C1's and why.

2) I know nothing about Linux at this point so I wonder how much OS work I will have to do, if at all.

3) I see many people change the ROM to other packages - again why, what do you like about these other system that would cause you to change from what came with the C1 originally.

Hi,

I've had mine for less than a week now and am quite pleased with it.

I have Just Reader on there for books.
I have Cresho's Nintendo packages on there for gaming.
I have MAME on there for more gaming (though it is a bit slow unless I upclock the Z)
I am currently ripping an Alanis Morrisette CD for some music while I am on the go.  I am more likely to have the Z in my pocket than my iPod when I need (more) distraction or need to get a little work done.
As soon as I get a large SD card or microdrive, I will try a little video work with it.

No network yet, as it's not a priority.  I would, however, like a nice USB host cable to be able to hook things up to the Z when needed.

As to why people use alternate ROMs or environments, I cannot speak for the whole community....But I gues that Cacko, or GPE, or OZ sort of pick up where Sharp left off.  There are no more updates from Sharp for the stock machines, there are certainly no US updates for C series machines as they were never sold here.  The open source solutions help keep things current as these ARE little Linux boxen.

Enjoy your Z, I love mine.  I too have a Newton 2100, as well as a Psion.  The Z blows them both away.

Well if the C1 blows it all away I will be mighty happy. Why did you settle on the Cacko ROM over the others. What additional features did it give you over the Sharp ROM and how hard is it to install,as I am not a linux person -(or should I add yet?)

The Sharp ROM comes with a few shortcomings and annoyances that you can fix yourself with a bit of hacking around if you know a bit of linux. Cacko fixes most of those annoyances and includes quite a few extra nifty features on top of that. Also, the Sharp ROM comes completely in Japanese and Cacko is completely in English.

Ahh, I had wondered about that.  If I reflashed would I be stuck with Japanese GUI at first.

What's the best out of the box networking card for the Cacko ROM?  Wired and Wireless are both options for me.

Mine is coming with an English install, thus I won't have to worry about learning japanese in addition to linux. I will look at  Cacko and see if it it appeals to me, thank.

I am relatively new to linux and do not work in the tech industry.

I run pdaxrom rc12 and am very happy with it.  Cacko was in development when I settled on an OS so I don't really know how it compares.  I like pdaxrom much better  than the sharp rom.  

Applications I use daily:

gnumeric:  this is a biggie for me.  I use it at work.  I like it much better than hancom or whatever that was on the sharp rom.

sylpheed:  a good email client.  It takes care of all of my needs.

dillo:  a pared down browser.  Quick but not as comprehensive as some.  It fits most of my needs.  

bash shell:  I am learning to program with the shell and have created some simple applications for work.

abiword:  I use this every once in a while.  When I want to create a document it is quicker to do it on a desktop machine.

I have an Ambicom wireless card that works out of the box in pdaxrom.

As far as working on the OS, I have done only a few things:  1)  I installed an updated keyboard mapping so that I can use the back quote;  2)  Every time I reboot I have to run a simple command so that applications not mounted on the root will be accessible.  I am sure that I can incorporate this into some startup routine.  I have not figured out where to put it yet.

Pdaxrom is worth a look-see.

pdaXrom is definately promising. since I am using my Zaurus as my work laptop, I cannot afford to reflash it yet, but eventually, I will be able to play with pdaXrom. The main difference with it is that it runs X windows natively whereas Sharp ROM uses Qtopia. Also the implementation of hard float vs soft float in pdaXrom makes it much faster than the Sharp ROM too and since it got an active developer base, the applications compiled for it can be bleeding edge. The Sharp ROM is stable and runs most of the old apps. Cacko is an improved version of Sharp ROM which makes it more usable without needing to hack around too much. There's also X/Qt which is an X windows version for Qtopia. With X/Qt on Sharp/Cacko, you can run some of the pdaXrom applications such as abiword, gnumeric, sylpheed, dillo, etc..

Sylpheed really kicks ass! It does IMAP over SSL and is pretty quick. Sylpheed and abiword is what I use most the time for my office needs. Occasionally, I also use openoffice to open staroffice documents and convert files to pdf.
