Zroadmap + Flite. Help!
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:43:24 pm »
I am running zroadmap v1.02 on a SL5500 (Sharp ROM 3.13) and it works fine.
However I would like to take advantage of flite since it is support by zroadmap.

I copied flite.bin v1.2 into /usr/bin and it works fine from command line.
It sounds fine and reads any text or file input without any errors.
When I enable flite for zroadmap it only reads the very first navigation text
and then it goes silent. If I restart zroadmap it does the same thing.
Only reads the first navigation text then stops. The navigation text continues
showing up on the screen while driving but flite remains silent.

I made an 8mb swap file and tried that thinking I was running out of memory but same thing     I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Can you help me get started on configuring flite on my Sharp 3.13 rom Zaurus?  I've never been able to figure out how to even BEGIN installing flite.  I have zroadmap which works great and would like to have voice navigation.
I don't know anything about "compiling" so I just want to know where I get the file to put in usr/bin to get flite working.  The web site [a href=\"http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/flite/packed/flite-1.2/flite-1.2_bin16KHz_arm-linux.tar.gz]http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/flite/packed/...rm-linux.tar.gz[/url] does not have the file.  Where do I get it?  AND is that the file I need?

Thanks.

You can get the file from here:

http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/flite/packed/flite-1.2/

and download this file: flite_arm_bin.tar.gz

Then untar the file and it will give you two files: flite.bin and flite_time.bin.
Copy flite.bin into your /usr/bin or /home/QtPalmtop/bin directory.
Make sure your permission are set for all users. Now start up a terminal and
type: flite -t "hello world" to test it out. That should be it.

Try it out with zroadmap and see if you have the same problem I have.

Good luck!

Thanks, timkz, but I just get Bus error when I type in that command.  I can get flite_time to work by typing the command flite_time 02:45 (or any other time) but flite gives a bus error.  Does that mean it needs more room to operate?  How do I fix that?

The easiest way to make more room is to uninstall some software. However if you have both flite.bin and flite_time.bin copied into /usr/bin that takes up space too.
I would remove flite_time.bin and then try running flite.bin.

I personally have never seen a bus error. So I can't tell you if it has anything to do with lack of program space. I went into "Settings/System Info" on my zaurus and of the 32mb available I have approx. 12mb used, 6mb buffers, 8.5mb cached and 5.5mb free. Flite runs fine without setting up any swap space on my SL5500.

Let me know if this helps.

I removed flite_time.bin before I tried flite.bin.
I only have 984 kb free..maybe that's my problem  I have: Used, 12 MB; Buffers, 3 MB; Cached, 16 MB; Free 964 kb.

I DO have a 16 MB swap file on my SD card.

At any rate,  does Zroadmap do voice when you click on a road on the map or do you have to be navigating?  Have to wait till tomorrow to "navigate" somewhere to try it out.

I created a symlink to flite on my sd card and I got a voice announcement when I first did a "find address" but it would not speak after that.  Plus I am having trouble with the maps just suddenly disappearing which didn't happen before the installation of flite.

Will let you know after I test it tomorrow if I have your same problem.

timkz:

I tried flite with Zroadmap out today and the voice only works ONCE and then stops just like you said.

Does anybody have this working?  Maybe it just needs some kind of setting in the "voice" tab in Zroadmap or does it have to be installed to internal memory?

I have a 16 MB swap file.

Thanks for any help.

I'm using zroadmap v1.0.1 on an SL-C760, with flite 1.2, running Cacko 1.21b, and I get the same symptoms.  Flite will read the navigation text the first time, and then stop.

Flite works fine with OpieReader or on its own, so I suspect zroadmap is at fault here.

Does anyone have zRoadmap working with flite?

It's time for me to update my ROM anyway -- my Z has become a little unstable, rebooting at will occasionally, so I'll probably try it and see if it works better under Cacko 1.22

From your description, it looks like roadmap does not detect the end of flite: roadmap
will not launch flite more than once at a given time (only one program can access the sound card at a given time).

I have had several problems making RoadMap work fine with flite on BSD: signal management not working. This might be similar.

This was solved in 1.0, but there might be a problem with how zroadmap was built.

BTW, there are a two of us who would like to revive zroadmap in the sense that we want zroadmap, latest version of roadmap source, to become available on the roadmap site (it seems the zroadmap (i.e. zaurus port of roadmap) web site is gone.

We need a Zaurus user to volunteer testing the build. Any volunteer? Please email to pascal.martin@iname.com

Thanks.
