Installing Kismet on C860
« on: March 02, 2004, 08:59:45 am »
I bought a Dynamism C860 and I want to install Kismet on it.  The newest Kismet arm file is dated Feb. 1, 2004 and it is in the tar.gz format.  I don\'t know that much about linux, but can I simply copy this tar.gz file to the root directory of my SD card, log into the terminal as root, and the then execute \"tar xvf filename.tar.gz\" to install Kismet?  If not, how do I install it?  Also, how do you remove it from the C860 if you want to uninstall it?  Thanks.

For Kismet (and most other wireless security tools) to work  you need Patched drivers for the WiFi to be able to put it in monitor_mode. Other than that.. it shouldn\'t be a problem. tar -xzvf kismet*.tar.gz and install the IPK within the gziped tarball.

I\'m using OpenZaurus 3.3.6pre1 at the moment which comes with the drivers already patch

I\'m running Kismet on a C860 with the Sharp ROM (Japanese). Probably the easiest and safest thing would be for you to use a package installation. The packages I installed are kismet_zaurus_2.8.1_arm.ipk and kismet-qt_2.0.0_arm.ipk. The only thing I had to do was to make sure the Kismet GUI runs as root (tap and hold on the icon then check run as root in the dialog box that appears). You can grab the files here:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/kismet-...t_2.0.0_arm.ipk
http://gaos.org/moin/SharpZaurus?action=At...s_2.8.1_arm.ipk

Hope this helps

...<snip>...

Those packages work for me too, on my C860. However, I only experience success when starting kismet_monitor and kismet at home, when the WiFi card is \"alive\" before I start using kismet. Then I I\'m able to see the two networks that are apparently visible from here: my own and another one.

When I\'m starting kismet away from home, I\'m unable to set the WiFi card to anything sensible. I\'ve tried seeking information about how to set up a network connection for kismet and other tools like it, and as far as I understand, that connection should have the following settings:
address: 1.1.1.1
mask: 255.255.255.255
gateway: 1.1.1.0
The network setup in the stock Sharp ROM doesn\'t allow me to create such a connection, however.
How did you go about this?
Best regards,
bb

Can the following two packages be installed using the regular Sharp ROM\'s Add/Remove Programs utility, or do you need to do some kind of special install using the terminal?

You can use the Sharp ROM\'S Add/Remove Programs utility with the two packages above. I think I may have had to install the kismet package to internal memory and the GUI portion was installable on the SD card. These versions for the first time seemed to have no problem starting the WLAN card (Buffalo WLI-CF-S11G) as long as I use the Sharp3x-prism2 scheme in the GUI config panel.

I installed the two Kismet packages on my C860 as \"Guest\" recommended in the third post above.  It works, which is great, and finds my wifi card right away even if it is turned off when Kismet starts up.  However, on the Kismet website there is a much new pakage dated February 1, 2004.  The site says everyone should upgrade to that package so I tried it.  The new package, which replaces the 2.8.1 version, is nearly twice as big as the one Guest recommended above.  I unpacked the tarball on my windows PC and installed the ipk file I found inside.  It installed OK, but when I start the program I always get a \"cannot connect to server\" error.  If I uninstall the new package and then go back to the older version Guest recommended it all works OK once again.  Does anyone know what needs to be done to get the latest version working on the C860?  Any suggestions?
