Av500 Won't Start - Stalls On Boot Screen
« on: June 12, 2006, 02:58:08 pm »
Been loving the AV500.  Have had no problems at all with the device (which was given to me by my company as a Christmas gift in 2005).

During MP3 playback through TV/stereo, I stopped playback and disconnected the device from the TV pod.  Plugged in USB to transfer files to device, powered on as normal.  Boot screen appears, flash of HDD activity, then powers down.  Since then, every power on is the same thing and results in power down about 7 seconds after boot screen appears.

Troubleshooting attempted:
- removed battery to ensure device is reset, no affect
- tried with DC power supply connected, same symptoms except the boot graphic stays on the screen forever (this also happens with power supply disconnected if I keep the start button depressed)

When connected to USB, XP never sees the device so I can't format or chkdsk, etc. using windows.

Any suggestions?  I'm dying without this thing!

Barry

I had the same problem with my unit.

Seems that the hard drive is bad.  I had to send it back to Archos for them to fix.

Same problem for me ... bad HD, replaced now all's well.  Is HD failure a common failure mode on these devices?

I've just got the same problem, with an AV500 80Gb purchased in May from QVC, but very rarely used. QVC have offered a full refund (they no longer stock the item), but I was wondering whether it would be advisable to ask Archos to repair it under warranty.

Has anyone had any problems with a repaired HDD?

I would not see them repairing the HDD, but replacing yes.  May be replaced for one that had been refurbished by supplier.  Mine is currently at Archos now for a failed HDD.

If QVC is offering you a refund I would take that versus repair.  If you bought it in May it is probably cheaper now some place else.  I would just buy a new one.
