1.20 "daniela" - hermes vs. orinoco
« on: March 11, 2004, 10:54:16 pm »
my setup: 760 with 1.20 rom installed with ambicom wifi card

my issue:  when I\'m using the hermes drivers the little wifi status (blue/green/yellow/red) seems to work fine... it shows blue when I\'m near the AP, etc.

but when I switch to the orinoco drivers (to use wellenreiter), the status gets all screwed up and shows red and gives the warning (signal level low) constantly, even when I\'m right on top of the AP.

any suggestions?

hmm hermes versus orinoco doesn\'t make sense since hermes is the low level driver for orinoco. any chance you mean hostap?

Yes, he most likely ment hostap.  There are some strange things with the network applet and different wifi drivers. When I look at the output produced by iwconfig utility, I see that different drivers report signal strength in different format. That may be the problem, but I have no idea on how to fix it...

thanks for the clarification... sorry I don\'t know exactly what drivers are what here...

I should have clarified that I do not have the hostap drivers installed.  I see the change when I switch the wlan-ng.conf with the hermes.conf.

It\'s not a big deal because wifi seems to work just fine... it just has that little warning every few seconds...

ORG, I\'m getting the exact opposite behaviour. I\'m using a Buffalo card, in case that matters.

When I\'m using wlan-ng.conf, the status works fine. When I use hermes.conf, I get the weak signal/red warning all the time, even when I\'m close to my wireless router/AP. I think it\'s a false warning, as the connection seems fast. But the warning text prevent me from clicking anything on the task bar until it disappers for a few seconds.

This is a bug in Qtopia/Sharp which expects fixed code decibel ranges from the driver which (complying to the Linux Wireless Extension standard) it is not supposed to deliver. Someone should fix Qtopia/Sharp to use SIOCGIWRANGE.

actually that\'s the exact same thing I\'m getting... I don\'t think I made myself all that clear in my post

maybe someone will fix the issue as mickeyl pointed out.
