Ted, Abacus And Siag For Pdax

Sorry, vim isn't graphical and wouldn't be ideal for editing rtf files.  I'm catering for my dad's complaints here and I know vim would go way over his head.

It's a shame the TextEdit app that comes with pdaXii13 doesn't have a spell checker as the formatting tools are hidden away under Ted.

Very good news for everyone who uses pdaX for office tasks!

First off, I've solved my 'gnumeric takes too long to load' problem- all you have to do is uninstall scim if you don't use it. With scim installed, gnumeric takes about 35s to load. Without scim the load time goes WAY down to about 7s!!!

Also, the author of Ted says he'll implement my suggestion to add common formatting tasks (Left, Right, Centre and Justify of text) to the much more easily accessible main format menu (instead of having to dig through a few different menus to get to these options) for the next version!

That's why I was wondering why you talk about slowly starting of Gnumeric ... I've never thought 10 seconds is too much  But seems you had scim, which I never install.

So I checked the output of xlsfonts under pdaXii13 and it does list the exact font that Ted is requesting but then I noticed that running xfontsel produces exactly the same errors that we've been experiencing with siag
Actually if you try to run most built-in X apps (xcalc, xclipboard, etc) you'll see it's the same, with differing fonts being specified as missing - it's as if this implementation of X can't find the font paths - even though they're specified correctly and issuing (just to make certain):

Code: [Select]
xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
xset fp rehash

Makes no difference. I also honestly doubt it could be solved by installing any more font packages.

(This is all from my limited knowledge of the workings of X ^__^;; )

I noticed that this question has also been asked before on this forum, and never satisfactorily answered. It seems like the 'Missing charsets in String to FontSet' problem is here for a while to come yet

Of course, anyone with more knowledge on this, please feel free to come along and correct me/help out

A workaround to avoid the X bug, is to edit the file /etc/sysconfig/locale and set the environment variable LC_ALL and LANG to C. Then, exit and restart X.

Code: [Select]
export LC_ALL=C
export LANG=C
