There may be cheaper ones but we know that SiS-based ones work just fine. So the cheapest SiS USB2VGA device is a possibility.

None for mini-USB, just get an adapter.

I was able to get a displaylink adaptor to run without problems on my linux laptop; I would guess you shouldn't have too many problems with the Z1

I imagine the displaylink adaptor needs to boot some firmware from the attached host, but that shouldn't be a problem  provided that the driver's fairly well written. The display link people are nice and friendly so it might be worth asking them!
