USB Host CF Card
« on: October 16, 2003, 09:58:44 am »
I found these products the other day and was wondering if anyone had any experience with using these in their SL-5500:

They are USB Host CF cards that claim to allow you to attach USB devices such as USB input devices and USB hard drives.  I have been wanting to attach my Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 MP3 player to my Zaurus and use a Zaurus MP3 player to play the files stored on it as if it were a mounted drive.  I know, it seems redundant:  Why play MP3s through a seperate device when the purpose of the first device is to play MP3s?  Simple, I\'d like to use my Z as the front-end rather than the Archos.

Since the Archos works as a USB hard drive and the Z doesn\'t work as a USB host, I found these cards that will add that functionality.  I was just wondering if anyone has tried them or had any more information on their use with the Z.

They are both a bit pricey (around $150), but would seem to be very useful.  Does anyone know anything more about these?  Do any (or all) of the ROMs include drivers for USB devices such as mass storage, keyboards, mice, etc?  I also have a Creative CardCam.  Does anyone know if I would be able to access it through USB using one of these cards?  It requires a Windows program to download images from the camera, rather than showing up as another drive.  Would there be support for devices like that?

I don\'t know of anyone who has yet bough one of these CF USB host cards. None of the ROMs come with USB host drivers, but I think InterPocket at least states that they supply an ipk with the kernel drivers. Plus it wouldn\'t be too hard for someone to compile the necessary kernel drivers themselves.

The CardCam would not work as there do not appear to be any Linux drivers for it and it does not seem to present itself as a USB mass storage device. Creative doesn\'t have a very good track record when it comes to releasing the information required for writing drivers for their webcams either.
