So can the displays of the C760 and C860 be seen in the daylight or not?

I\'m ready to trade my SL-5600, but daylight visibility is a must...

If you turn brightness up to maximum it is viewable. It\'s a pretty dim image, but if you needed to look something up you could. If the primary place you\'d look things up is outdoors, I\'d avoid a 760

Well Stu, there are alot of documents stating that the c860 has 128 megs of ram and 64 megs of rom. If there were no difference what would be the advantage of buying the other. It\'s not like getting a car were the only upgrade is different paint or a cup holder.

Maybe it\'s like getting a model 2004 car instead of a model 2003.

As I understand it, the 860 is nothing more than the *next* model-
that is to say, the replacement for the 760, which is no longer being produced or sold by Sharp.

In fact, C760 (and C860) users in these forums have reported that their
devices have 64mb of SDRAM, and 128mb of flash NVRAM (aka ROM).

Sharp has no incentive to differentiate the two models; the C860 is selling, new (in Japan) for the same price that the C760 sold, when it was released.  Merchants who still carry the C760 are selling it at a discount, just because its \"old\", but the only different features are onboard software, and case color.

Whatever the documents state, I\'d be more inclined to trust savvy users who have poked at the internals of their own devices.

Without a doubt the C750 keyboard is easier. You can actually type a lot more on it faster, though after quite sometime holding it in your palm and thumbboarding it, it palm aches a bit. Then I usually lay it down on my lap (or table) and finger type (slender fingers).

Actually the 5000D keyboard was good too, but only for short messages and all that. For really long message typing the C7xxx keyboard is definitely a plus.

I have tried reading my C750 screen in daylight and you will have to kind of peer at it at angles to really make out whats written in small print.
As treke said - if you want to use it in daylight a lot, avoid the C7xx series (or else you will have to look for shaded areas all the time).

From the Sharp Japan site http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/slc760.html and http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/slc860.html

C760

Flash 128MB(ユーザーエリア約65MB)
SDRAM 64MB(ワークエリア)

C860

Flashメモリー 128MB(ユーザーエリア約65MB)
※ユーザーエリアは翻訳辞書データなどの削除可能なプリインストールデータを削除した場合の値です。
SDRAM 64MB(ワークエリア)

The extra bit in the C860 entry says \"the user area value is the value after deleting the preinstalled translation dictionary data.

Looking at all the other data I have in Japanese gives exactly the same specs - and Japanese electronic advertising is very big on specs.

From what I have read on Japanese sites, the change from C760 to C860 was to focus more on the Business market. Hence the highlighting of the added Eng-Jap translation software and the cheap wifi/dial-up/phs isp costs available only to C860 owners.

The only advantage is the new software packages and the fact that except for leftover stock you are unable to purchase the C760 now in Japan, however the C700 and C750 are still available to buy and advertised by Sharp in the electronic stores.

coolass - check your sources....

the 860 is exactly the same as the 760 with regards to hardware... the ONLY difference is the paint job.

they both have 128mb Flash and 64mb SDRAM, none of the C series Zs have the transreflective displays.

the only differece between the the 860/760 and the 750 is that the 750 has 64/64.

the 700 is a different story

Sorry I didn\'t know a mistake would be so costly. But their are sites that say the same, guess I\'ll stick to what I know and that\'s my sl-5500 & sl-6000.

The C860 has a CG Silicon display (described as TFT semi-transmissive by Sharp). It\'s identical to the C760\'s, and the look the same side-by-side. I can see the C860 screen outdoors, but I wouldn\'t want to spend a lot of time working outdoors. Though I don\'t find transflective PPC screens much better.
