Help! Stylis Tip Stuck in Holder!
« on: November 10, 2003, 12:50:22 am »
I was at a party and my zaurus was in my pocket, I had my hand in my pocket and with my finger just kept taking the stylus in and out of the holder when I noticed it scraping a little bit when I put it back in.  I took it out to look at it the end of it had come unscrewed and stuck in the zaurus.

I have tried putting tissue on the threads and sticking the stylus in to catch onto it and pull it out but that hasn\'t work, I have also tried poking it loose with the red tube from a can of compressed air.

Any other ideas?  I think I will put a little super glue on the threats and catch it and pull it out that way, I just hope it comes out, I can\'t see how it is possibly stuck at the moment, I would think just turning it upsidedown would make it fall out.  Ugh....

If all else fails I\'ll leave the stylus in and buy a pen/stylus combo.

Thanks all!

The stylus silo retention mechanism uses the groove in the tip to keep the stylus in, so that is what will be keeping the tip stuck. I would be a little wary of using superglue to get it out, as you may well stick the stylus to the silo. You could use blu tac (I think that\'s called sticky putty in the US)

Once you get the stylus tip out I would recommend the official Palm Tungsten T stylus as well. There seems to be an obvious design/materials flaw with the SL5500 stylus as many have had theirs broke, including me, even when treated gently.

The one thing with the Palm stylus is after using it for a while it makes the retention mechanism too loose to hold the Sharp stylus firmly, but  the Palm stylus stays in fine.

I tried the tacky putty but it just left it on the inside, it wouldn\'t pull it out.

Then I tried using super glue on the inside threads of the stylus but that still wouldn\'t catch.

Is there a way to open up the zaurus?  I just really want to get the tip and any putty outside of my baby!

This is an ongoing problem as i have read several posts relating to this.
I believe that dismantling the Z is the best way to go.  There is a post on doing this (including pictures) but for the life of me i couldn\'t find it.  Here it is in writing as i remember it:
First be sure to remove the battery.
1. Remove the slider by sliding it down almost until it clicks into place...but not quite.  Grab the rail on one side and firmly but gently raise it away and up from the Z.
2. Now have at the screws (there should be 6 as i remember)
3. Once again gently but firmly pull apart the Z in half, rocking the halves back and forth helps to separate them.
4. Once the halves are apart, the tip of the stylus should just fall out.  use the TT stylus from now on.

Thank you so much!

I had attempted to take it apart before but I did not know of the screw under the keyboard!!!!

It came apart just as it should and I almost had a heart attack because I used tacky stuff to try to get it out and it had made its way onto some components!! Good thing the stuff wasn\'t conductive... I pulled out the tip and cleaned out all the yellow tacky stuff, gave it a little compressed air, popped it together and its good as new!

Time to hit up best buy for a better stylus!

Thanks again!!!!!

How about a hot needle? Get a long metal needle really hot (hot enough to melt the plastic on the stylus) then push it down \'til it melts a little hole in the stylus tip. Let it cool, and you should be able to gently twist it out (gently is the key word here).
