good tkc rom install-NOT following (outdated?) instructions

I just got the Kompany ROM to install on my SL5600.  Some of my experiences may be useful to others:

1.  There are a lot of outdated/incorrect instructions floating around for how to flash a SL5600.  For example,  the instructions posted at:
ihttp://www.thekompany.com/embedded/rom/userguide.php3?PHPSESSID=a9b40d4d53c25ac66724f165ecb07c8anstructions
did not work on my Z, neither did those posted on the ZUG System FAQ at:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...9730dac605e#144

2.  I figured out the correct method by trial and error (2 hours) but later found it posted at:
http://community.zaurus.com/docman/view.ph...600-install.txt

3.  There are several authoritative-sounding entries in the ZUG FAQ which are not correct for SL-5600.  I have found that generally the notation SL-5x00 should be interpreted as SL-5000/SL-5500, ie excluding SL-5600.  For example one FAQ entry states that CF card is required for flash.  $65 later I found the flashing instructions given above, which allow flash from SD or other media.

Nevertheless this experience was easier than some I have had in using Open Source s/w and I am certainly pleased to have a \"real\" linux box in the palm of my hand now.

Thanks loads to theKompany and other developers and maintainers of ZUG site.

hello prof- I think you make a good point... 5x00 doesn\'t always include the 5600, well as far as true similarities that is.

And unfortunately the FAQs you referenced are dated March and April of 2002.  While they are a bit dated, the \"How do flash a zaurus\" FAQ is still 100% correct, yet it doesn\'t apply to all z models and ROMs.

Your instructions for the 5600 tkc rom flashing are great.  I\'ll add it to the ZUG how-tos (wiki area).  I think the FAQs for flashing should be changed to reference specific flashing instructions for the different models/roms.  And the CF question simply needs to be updated...

Thanks and regards!

the flash instructions for 5600 seems like they are  the same for c7x0 series..

I wonder if you can change the OK + Power menu for the C7x0 to display in English (that is if what I\'m saying is correct)
C700 w/ Cacko 1.21b | 5500 w/ tkcROM
C760 w/ Cacko 1.21b
Lexar 256MB SD | Viking 1GB CF
Netgear MA701 WiFi | Ambicom WL1100C WiFi
Sharp CE-AG06 Camera | PDAir Leather Case | PDAir 3 in 1 stylus | G2 PDA Screen Protector

wikis allow for refactoring whereas forums/flat files do no.
