Bad pixels on Zaurus?
« on: May 20, 2004, 09:46:36 am »
I\'ve noticed 2 1/3rd pixels that are broken on my VGA Zaurus.  You can only notice when the screen is dark or black.  There is a green dot in one location and a red dot in another location.  Since 1 pixel = 3 individual color dots: Red + Green + Blue... these are 2 1/3rd pixels that are broken.  They don\'t turn off unless the machine is off.

This \"may\" have been from something poking it... but now my Zaurus is no longer perfect... oh well..

Has anyone else had something like this before?

My screen appears perfect.  Let\'s hope it stays that way!  There\'s supposed to be a \"massage\" technique you can use that sometimes brings dead pixels back to life.  It might be hard to do under the touchscreen, but just thought I\'d mention it.

As long as the massage technic doesn\'t cause my bad pixels to multiply.

I\'ve got one red pixel (\"1/3rd pixel\") stuck on the screen on my c700 (99,9% of the time not visible but annoying anyway).

I mentioned this to Brett at conics.net (where i ordered my Z), and he replied something like
\"8 pixels or more in a group or line = replacement\"

Not that I would like to send it over to Japan again....

Yes... on a screen of 307,200 pixels (or 921,600 1/3rd pixels), having 1 or 2 bad \"1/3rd\" pixels is insignificant... especially on a touch screen which gets much more abuse than any normal laptop screen.

Funny subject...

I previously have owned a sony clie PEG-655c... bleh..
I purchased it at circuit city.. bleh..  (this was a few years back)
After a week of use, on of the pixels broke.. so i returned that one, and exchanged it for another one (same model),  well what do you know, a few days later, same problem!!!!!!!!!!!  and same pixel!!!!  I returned it this time for good, and got my money back.  I was going to give Sony some time to fix that problem...   So anyways, 3 months ago I decided to give the whole PDA thing a try again.. and I went with a Zaurus - thank God.  And as I was running a the Jeode pallete test, I noticed a broken pixel  :?

I\'m not even going to bother returning it to Amazon, because I am too inpatient, and I guess I have just learnt to deal with the broken pixel...  I take it as a good luck sign.. If you have a broken pixel, it is because the magical pixel fairy has blessed your PDA with the endurance to take falls and spills.  I have dropped my Zaurus about 2 times already... :?

Maybe I am still not ready for a PDA?
But my Zaurus took the falls like a champ, and keeps on tickin\'

LOL!!  ha ha ha!!

I think my 2 \"third pixels\" happened in the car what I had the Zaurus (SL-C860) folded in PDA mode with the screen exposed next to my huge ugly work laptop.  I went over a bump and the corner of the laptop came down on the screen.  That evening I noticed 1 red dot on dark screens and over the next week a green dot slowly started to appear.

I now travel with my Zaurus in the closed position and I haven\'t had any additional pixels appearances.

I guess, all things considered, I should be glad that the screen handled that well!  I do remember the old black and white LCD screen games that I seemed to always break in the simplest of situations.... and it was always a catastrophic LCD screen fracturing... instead of a single pixel... or 2 1/3rd pixels.

I've just discovered more, I seem to get one each time I flash pdaXrom

I don't care if the pixel fairy is blessing me, I'd shoot the cow if she heads my way again

Padishah_emperor : I think I've notices something like that too ...
I have something between 2 and 4 bad pixels ... depending on utilisation ... for exemple the screen is perfect (no bad pixel at all) under maintenance (D+M) menus, then if I flash pdaXrom I'll have between 2 and 4 bad pixels depending on the version (seem to going better... just 2 pixels last time)... with QT rom I don't have any bad pixel but the screen's bottom  is going weird ... some lines are like "double" .. dunno how to explain I think I'll have to take pictures ...
BTW , IMHO it could be an internal memory related problem as using the maintenance menu I found out I have a few defective sector in the NAND memory of my Z... could it be defective sectors in VRAM blocks ? I can't believe pixels are really dead as dead pixels do not appear in QT rom  nor in maintenance menu so wtf ?
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

Everytime I install pdaXrom I get dead pixels somewhere on the screen, not that I'm saying that pdaXrom is necessarily responsible but..  something.. somewhere is afoot....

A flash back to Qtopia resolved the problem, mmh.
Perhaps my Z has a similar problem
