128bit WEp on SL-6000L
« on: July 12, 2004, 12:29:56 pm »
I am having problems getting my 6k to connect to my Schools network where they uses a 128bit WEP key.  I had the same problem with my Desknote connecting with my D-Link 122+ USB WiFi card but had found information that others could not get the D-Link to work with WEP on linux and stopped trying to make it work when I was at school.  Now that I have my 6k I have been trying to get it to work.  The school gave me the key in both HEX and in ascii.

I have seen this discussion about the 6k and the airport.  I noticed they found changing down to 64 fixed the problem.

My question now is, Has anyone got a 6k to work on a WiFi network using 128bit WEP Key.

Here are the things i know about my schools network:
  • 128bit WEP
  • MAC Filtering
  • 802.11b Access Points (Unknown Devices)
  • IT is nto sure if it is an Open or shared network
My 6k works just fine on my home network and at work where I am connecting to at Airport Wireless hub without WEP.  I have not tried to connect to any other AP with WEP on yet so I am not sure if I can get it to work.  One of my next tests will be to enable 128bit WEP on my home network and see if I can get my Z to connect to it.  Though any sujestions would be great.

(preface -- first post.  long time lurker.  finally registered.)

I've got my Z6000L working on my home network, with 128 bit WEP and MAC filtering.   It was pretty simple, but I'll admit to being a complete wireless n00b.  The Z is my first wireless device, so it's my first opportunity to really fiddle with it.

Thanks...at least now I know it should work on 128bit WEP...now I will just have to try it on my home network, to make sure I can get it to work on my Z then I can go work with IT at my school this friday when I am there for classes...

Hi:

See my post below about 128 bit encryption and wifi using an apple airport.  It may take you a while to get it to work.  I gave up and used 64 bit and now everything works.  I have no idea why the 6000L has such a problem with higher bit levels.

Good luck.

Aloha,

I have set up 128bit WEP at work and at home to work with the 6k and it works (kinda). One of the access points doesn't work with the 6k. I always use HEX for WEP key input, you just have to make sure you enter it correctly, both on the AP as well as the 6k. Easiest is to write the WEP key on your desktop and then copy paste it to both your 6k and the admin page of the AP. That way you will be sure both have the same key. If you don't know whether you have an Open or Shared system, try both. If it is set up wrong, all the feed back you will get from the 6k is that it can't establish a connection and that the WEP key might be wrong. But the WEP doesn't have to be wrong. The application seems to only have one error message.

But it should work... (I used an Linksys WAP11 and a BENQ Wifi Router, btw, NEVER buy anything from BENQ, crap company)
