Got my 6000L from Amazon - Some impressions
« on: April 03, 2004, 03:28:18 pm »
1).   Well made, much more rugged than my 5600
2).   BIG !  Also much bigger than my 5600
3).   Screen is unbelievably beautiful
4).   Integrated 802.11B is strictly a no-brainer, very easy to setup
5).   All SHARP apps seem very stable, synch with Outlook worked fine
6).   None of my theKompany stuff works, tkcVideo and tkcGallery
7).   Landscape mode is very nice, Opera is very useable that way.
8).   Subjectively seems much faster than my 5600

BIG PROBLEM (for me anyway) is that movies really stink, I mean big time.  Video that looks fine on my 5600 is choppy and completely out of synch on the 6000L, in either portrait or landscape.  May be Sharp\'s Media Player, may be the screen itself, I have no idea.  I\'d love to have my tkcVideo back, but the 5600 version is pretty dysfunctional on it.  I use this function in my PDA during long flights, waits in airports, etc., so this may be going back to Amazon.  Major disappointment.  The quality of the screen is soooo good, I was really looking forward to better movie quality, not worse !  Aaarrrggghhhh !

I am not totally suprised that video playback is not that good, the higher resolution screen requires four times as much memory copied for each video frame displayed.
However, if there are any good video players for the Cxx Zs, these should work well on the 6000.

The players on the Cxxx Zs all recommend playing at 320x240. You should be able to tap and hold on an apps icon to get to a dialog that lets you set what resolution an app runs in.

Do any other 3rd party apps run ok on the 6000? theKompany have had to release several Cxxx specific versions of their apps, but apart from adding zooming support I don\'t see why they had too. The QT libraries have layouts that do all the automatically resizing for different resolutions and orientations.

You could try running theKompany apps from the terminal to see why they\'re not working.

Here I am replying to my own stuff !  I found the \"trick\" to making the video work, and boy does it work !  You\'ve got to tap/hold the MediaPlayer icon and check Display With Magnified Screen.  I don\'t why this works, but it worked great !

As far as \"other 3rd party apps\" the only other ones I use are tckSky (which runs fine) and ClearSky (which is just a newer version of tkcSky) and it runs fine as well.  I haven\'t fired up my AirCable bluetooth yet, but I\'ll post a message when I do.

Everything else works like a charm, my two SD cards (one 256Mb and one 512Mb) a 512Mb and a 64Mb CF, an IBM 1Gb microdrive, and a Magicstor 2.2Gb microdrive.  Now I just need to find a case big enough to hold this thing !

I am hoping that SafeDee runs correctly on the 6000, I don\'t have access to a 6000, but one or two people have graciously offered to try it.

I plunged into the world of the SL-6000, but I\'ve decided to keep my SL-5600, for development and tests.

While I was using the 6000 I thought it seemed a bit faster than my 5600, which is running the overclocked (to 470 Mhz) kernel.  I decided to run the same benchmarks on the 6000 that I\'d run on the standard and overclocked kernels for the 5600, the results of which are on my Zaurus page.  I\'ve put together a separate page comparing the results here.

You SL-6000 owners will find the results to be quite embarrassing... uh... interesting, I mean.

Over all, I love the machine.  Its screen is incredibly bright and unbelievably clear.  I\'ve tested a few programs, with mixed results, but all have run with results ranging from little annoyances to no problems at all.  Qpegps *works*, but has a few visual problems on the non-map screens.  The mapping screen looks awesome at 480x640!

I have *crashed* Opera on web pages that don\'t crash on the SL-5600 runnning Opera 7.  There are some pages, which do work on the SL-6000, which don\'t work with the SL-5600 running Opera 7, however.

As has been reported elsewhere, IRK seems to work fine on the 6000, but I\'d just like to add that the Pocketop keyboard and the 6000 look like they were designed with each other in mind.  They look fantastic together!

Does the SL-6000 is ip54? \"Rugged\" and \"fall on flore from 1 meter\" let me think about this.
If so, it\'s very great for enterprise everyday use. Don\'t want to add a scanner to do picking?

Hey!!! The size is ideal. The OS is great and easily programmed. All docs are there.
It could be a great Workabout remplacement and the price is in the same level.

If someone need to deploy SL-6000 units in there enterprise or withing their commercial force, I\'m the one (4 years of experience in picking / bare codes, securised wireless connection, 5250/3270/telnet terminal emulation).

Just imagine what could acheive your commercials on the road with a SL-6000 in their hands. No paper, direct signature with the pen, easy management of the wall client database, easy remote synchronisation of the commerial database (orders, clients, ...) + remote agenda/contact management + files synchronisation + easy presentation on video projector. Be ready wherever you are with a litle device that can be carried easily.

So... please just to confirm, tkcVideo works great on the SL-6000 ?

Ive been looking for software to playback divx movies and I even wrote Dr. Bott (no response).

So, it does work then ? (provided you check display magnified) and which version are you using ?

thank you to yodabob
