Exasperation

Okay, i've had my Palm Tungsten T3 kicking around since i got my Z c860 last summer, waiting to have the data all successfully transferred so i can get rid of it.  I have made several tries along those lines, but each time get discouraged and give up.

The problem is (or has been) that there is no way to go from Palm to Z without having Microsoft Outlook!  That's ridiculous!  At least, i can't see that there is.

Here's a brief listing of the dead ends:
-Tried to set up the Palm to sync (once) in linux, to get the data into Kontact.  Didn't want to figure out all the Palm/USB/kernel rebuild mess just to get the data transferred once.  Pursued other options
-Downloaded and installed QTopia Desktop.  Successfully imported the Palm data.  Then realized that nothing on the Z is compatible with the current Qtopia Desktop that is capable of all those cool imports, and that it can't export anything.
-Installed KO/Pi and KA/Pi in Windows, and promptly crashed it trying to import from Qtopia Desktop (see above).  Transferred addresses using VCF exported data from Palm Desktop, re-categorizing each contact after it was transferred.  This was after trying to beam contacts, which didn't seem to work at all (does beaming work on Cacko?)

Yay!  Halfway there!

-Realized there was just no easy way to transfer the calendar data without access to
Outlook, so i brought it home from work to install on my virus-ridden W2K partition long enough to sync and transfer.  Installation dies at 88%.  Outlook runs anyway, and i sync my Palm.  Outlook has the Calendar data!
-Windows KO/Pi Import OL menu option shows only Calendar data to import, no todo/tasks.  Calendar data is succesfully imported into KO/Pi!  The character set is screwed up though in the Palm->OL sync.  I'm not sure how i prevent that.

So.  Perhaps i should have just bitten the bullet and rebuilt my kernel, installed kPilot and all those other things to get the Palm to sync in linux, and then transferred the data that way.  I still don't like the sound of that.

But... i can't seem to get the tasks/todos from Outlook into KO/Pi.  It has that folder greyed out when importing/syncing.  What gives?

Anyway.  I really like KO/Pi and KA/Pi.  A bit large on the memory footprint, but very nice.  I just wish i could FINALLY get all my Palm data synced into the Z and dump the Palm.  It SHOULDN'T be this hard to migrate from Palm.  Really.

Maybe i missed an easy solution?

Follow up:

It turns out that all the Gentoo forums help wasn't, and in the end it was much easier to get the Palm to sync in Gentoo than it had seemed.

So, anyone trying to migrate from Palm to Z, i highly recommend you use the sync in linux to Kontact, and then exporting the data from there.   There is still character set confusion (there might be a solution for that), but it's sooo much easier and complete than going any other route.

Now i just need to move the memos, and it's done!
