I Need A Little Help Guys
« on: November 29, 2004, 05:22:57 pm »
well, i hate to say it but i was looking at a tungsten t5 and i still keep slapping my face to "why!"

my current setup is a-
zaurus sl5500 internet access through siemens s56 through irda.
1gb simpletech cf
1gb PNY          SD
Softwares are listed as
KO/PI pim applications(i love it!)
portabase
qashmoney
mileage calculator
pdf viewer
zbedic with the whole 200mb dedicated with wikipedia and dic and all.
bdictionary with medical libraries such as encyclopidia cracked/yanked from the Palm os libraries
thekompany software like explorer, ftp, videoplayer, audioplayer, voice recorder, gallery, .

Games like
rocketelite
interstellar flames
bustem
motocross stunt racer

and my favorite, zfceu with over 200 nintendo games installed and playable with full audio and full framrates.

i can watch full length movies and of course listen to my audio with plenty of space on my drives.

I been a sharp pda user since fOkin years since the turn of the 1990's.  I still have a "sharp My wizard" which works.  I have a sharp sl5500 which i love to death and can't seem to get away from.  If you guys wanna see another sharp cxx zaurus user, i need a few guys to let me know what works and some of your expiriences from usage and problems.  I was thinking of purchasing a cheap laptop and sticking in a mandrake 10 and then i saw a pdaxrom on a cxx handheld.

1.  Since pdaxrom seems to be a linux os, what can you do on it besides adding cddrives, hardisks, etc.  can you run all linux software on it (i have knowldge of recompiling, libraries, source files, etc)?

2. what is the difference between a cacko rom and a pdaxrom?  compare/contrast on both.

Im currently looking at this site for the device i want to purchase from
http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/index.html

3. well my sd card and cf card work on either cacko or pdaxrom?

4. what about wifi and bluetooth?  i have a cellphone s56 with bluetooth which i have not been able to find a compatable card which works on the sl5500 unless i buy one online.

5. what zaurus cxx do you recomment?  i was thinking of purchasing the c700 with the bl06 battery for starters or should i go up a notch?

what software will work or will not work on the cacko rom and the pdaxrom?
remember, these are ipk files

2. what is the difference between a cacko rom and a pdaxrom?  compare/contrast on both.

Cacko is basically the latest and greatest Sharp ROM converted to English and packaged up with a slightly tweaked kernel, nicer fonts, nicer icons, some handy Qtopia "plugins", and lots of other improvements. But the basic idea is that it remains close to 100% compatible with the Sharp ROM so apps that run on a stock CXXX will run on a Cackoized CXXX. I've been running Cacko (aside from the occasional OZ or pdaXrom experiment) since I got my C760 a few weeks after they hit the market.

pdaXrom is basically a completely new ROM with very little Sharp compatibility. It replaces all the Qtopia stuff (which most Zaurus GUI apps are designed for) with a full blown X Window system like you would find on a Linux desktop. What that means is that it can run just about any Linux app that someone takes the time to rebuild for pdaXrom. That includes things like Firefox, Gimp, Quake, etc. I tried pdaXrom and was way impressed with what that team has accomplished, but I just couldn't sacrifice my Qtopia apps or Sharp ROM compatibility so I went back to Cacko.

Probably. IIRC, both ROMs run lightly modified Sharp kernels, so if it works on a standard Zaurus, there's a good chance it will work on pdaXrom and a very good chance it will work on Cacko.

4. what about wifi and bluetooth?

For me, both work as well (or better) on Cacko as they did on my old 5500. WiFi worked fine for me on pdaXrom but I never tried Bluetooth.

Don't get the C700. It's light on memory and not as well supported by the alternative roms. Get at least a C750 or, if you want the big battery and some extra internal flash, a C760.

what software will work or will not work on the cacko rom and the pdaxrom?

For Cacko, most apps that work on a standard Sharp ROM, work fine. Games are sometimes a problem because they are set up for portrait mode and the CXXX in portrait mode doesn't have a d-pad below the screen for controls. You can use the arrow keys on the keyboard (if you can wrap your brain around the orientation change) but it doesn't work nearly as well.

For pdaXrom, few of the Zaurus apps you find will work, but pdaXrom has its own feed full of alternative goodies like Firefox and Thunderbird that won't normally work on Sharp ROMs. Check the pdaXrom feed to see what apps are available.

Note that your TKC apps for the 5500 will not work on a CXXX regardless of what ROM you use. They could (old versions actually did) but when the CXXX series came out, TKC created "special" CXXX version and crippled the 5500 versions so they refuse to run on the new machine. They expect you to purchase all your TKC apps again (at full price the last time I checked) if you want to use them on a CXXX.

that pretty much answered all my questions but 2 or 1.  what bluetooth cf card will work with the c750?.  I got payed today and i have around 650 dollars spending money.  I think ill check out the c750 and then ill look at the pdaxrom to see where I stand.

I love the idea of running almost any aplications on  a tiny handheld.  I will look at the feed from pdaxrom.

i think ill update my sl5500 to a c750.  thanks again

I hope my 2g combined worth of media cards will run on the new handheld

kinda sucks i wont see my nintendo games run on the cxxx platform unless, ill do a little digging but we will see.

my last questions.-

what bluetooth cf card will work with the c750?

what wifi cf card works?

Your best bet for those answers is to use this board's search function.

For Bluetooth I use an old Ambicom BT2000E CF card but those are no longer available retail and I think folks have had problems with Ambicom's newer BT CF cards. I think I recall reading reports that the Socket BT card works well. It's expensive but has the advantage of being flush with the CF slot (no protruding antenna). Lots of details are available in existing topics.

For WiFi I use an Ambicom WL1100C-CF card. Lots of others work. Again, check the forums. If you're considering pdaXrom, then asking your question in the pdaXrom forum may net you better info on pdaXrom compatible WiFi and BT options.
