clock resets after reboot (tried hwclock)

Hi. just bought a used 5600, installed 3.5.1 on it and the clock always resets to jan 1 1970 after reboot. tried setting TZ (what's an example of what that should be set to?) and running hwclock --systohc --localtime but it doesnt help.
