Some questions about the C860
« on: September 18, 2004, 11:27:41 pm »
Hi,

I would have some questions about the C860:

1) Could I use SSH X11 forwarding on it?

2) Could I use the port as a standard USB port (ex: connect a standard USB printer to it)? Can I connect a projector to it via USB?

3) I would like to have a memory card and a Wi-Fi card. What is the best setup compatibility wise and power consumption wise?

4) Is a notebook needed when you have this thing? I would basically use it as a terminal (SSH connections, X11 forwarding, etc)

Thanks a lot!

1. Yes if you install X/Qt or the pdaXrom.

2. No and No. There is a CF to VGA card that works with it.

3. You can have a CF Wifi card and and SD memory card.

4. That's how I use it, instead of a notebook.

Thank you for your reply.

About the  Cf to VGA card, it enables to connect it to a project tor, right? Who makes this card? Where can I find it at the lowest price?

The card is called CFXGA and is made by IOData. You can buy it directly from them and also through conics, I think. I don't think you'll see a lot of price differences and, unfortunately, it's not cheap.

The card has a VGA connector that you can plug into a projector or a monitor. It works fine with both. It also has a plug that looks like you could hook it up to a TV but I haven't tried this. It comes with an infrared remote control that is kinda cool.

About the USB port, people are conecting USB keyboards to the 6000L and they say it works. I've also found it related to 860C: http://www.heavygravity.com/article.php/20040518022612319  . This person uses the port for TCP/IP over USB. Are you sure the port cannon be used as a standard USB port?

The SL6000 can act as an USB host but the C860 doesn't, out of the box. I think there was a thread on this forum about porting this to the C860 but I don't recall what was the conclusion. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will add more information.

No, but you can buy a CF USB Host card ($130 at amazon.com) and connect most of USB periferials supported by linux.
