Zaurus 960?
« on: September 28, 2004, 10:39:30 am »
The C-860 is perfect, but has no WiFi. No doubt adding a WiFi chip is a small task for Sharp. I wonder if they plan to do that?

With the apparent retraction of Zaurus from US I wonder if Sharp is working on Zaurus at all...

Sharp has not abandoned the Japanese market where the Zaurus is a top seller...developement will go on.  Also, just because Sharp has "officially" withdrawn the Z from the North American market does not mean that it is unavailable.  There are more than enough on-line resources selling the Z in any of the current and past iterations.  The withdrawl hasn't really changed the way things work where most of us are concerned.  So I can't go into a local Staples/Office Depot and pick one up...where it will most likely be overpriced anyways.   Same goes for Sony.  The have withdrawn from the NA market but so what?  If I really wanted one of their models, there are more than a couple of on-line sellers that would satisfy my needs.

I am anxiously awaiting the next CEATEC where the next Zaurus models will most likely be announced.  I agree, add the Wifi and that would be close to perfect.  It would be nice if the screen on the 860 were just a little bigger.  Say 4 inches? and to top it all off... Bluetooth.

Sigh...but I would settle just for added wifi.

I think usb host and a screen I can see in the sun are more important than built in wifi and bluetooth.

But to each his own.

Hello all,

Just got an unofficial reply from our source in Japan that Sharp "may" have a new model out around end of November (Seamed quite confident).

No info on specs etc. what so ever. But if true, hopefully a bigger step up that the C760 to C860 update

If they make this one with a Barbie Pink top (Wife called the C760 Barbie White), I'll kill them.

I should point out that when I have contacted these guys in the past following rumours, they have always dismissed them. So I reckon there is something to this one.

Besides which, not good for business telling everyone there may be a new model when you have existing stock, so not sure why I am telling you guys

Oh, we have dropped the prices a little to compensate on the "Possible" new release. If it is Barbie pink, prices are going back up

Not always, only if they had no competition. If someone will come with good device with WiFi and keyboard, I will go with it. But if they hint me that they are working on something new I may wait.

Why WiFi is important for me? First, it's nice to browse the web while sitting on the couch instead of being behing my desktop. Second, I live in very urban area where there are hundreds of WiFi spots all around. Many of them are not password protected. I can have Internet while walking down the street. Well third, one day I may have a baby and I want internet on the playground :-)

Right - same here. I already have too much PDAs and stuff laying around here, but I'm longing for a C7x0 with built-in Wifi.

I would hope it would have better SD/MMC card support.  (I still have a 1 GB MMC that works on other devices but not on the Zaurus)  Maybe even SDIO support so that the SD slot can hold more than simple memory cards...

But Wi-Fi would be the best.

A larger screen would be good... but NOT if it makes the unit larger.  One of my biggest reasons for going with this unit at all is its small size.  As people keep asking for a slightly larger monitor on laptops, the laptops are getting bigger and bigger until some of them are actually approaching the size of the old IBM PCjr (desktop) I grew up with.  If they could maximize the screen within the current form factor, then that's great... but not if it affects the form factor.

Even WindowsCE devices started smaller and slowly inched their way larger.  I prefer smaller...

...how about a VGA Zaurus watch?

...Or the Zaurus SL-C10K with holographic and direct neural communication suport.  Beam me up Scotty!

What about SL6000? The "L" model has built-in Wifi and "W" has both Wifi and Bluetooth. It's so big the difference between 6000 and C7xx? Are the keyboard and the landscape operation mode a real advantage? Thanks...

The SL6000 is as close to perfect as C-860. The first is bulky, no fit in the belt pouch, the second has no WiFi. Sharp made 2 close-to-perfect devices instead of just one perfect.

I think they think too much. Be more stupid helps sometimes

Yeah, I remember your wrist-operated Zaurus.  I was on the thread when you posted it... you've made a name for yourself in history!

And... yes, the keyboard makes ALL of the difference!   I can touch type 30-words per minute on my Zaurus SL-C860... I doubt I could do that on the 6000.  Also landscape screen is better for compatibilty with most apps, vnc, games, etc... imagine playing Stratagus (WarCraft 2) sideways without a keyboard... it's just not the same.  Sorry

But I think you're on the right track.  We need a new Zaurus that combines the 6000 and SL-C860.

Sharp might be pulling its own PDA's off the market, and producing them for other companies, such as Danger, which wants to get out of the hardware business.  Refer to Dangers web site: Sharp Anouncement

Here's a better link (post immediately above): http://www.danger.com/press_release.php?item=040723b

Sorry boosalis, but yours is missing the colon and it confuses Firefox, which means I end up looking at Microsoft's site and have to wonder if it's some sort of strange joke.
