Bit Of Help Needed
« on: April 23, 2005, 06:42:34 pm »
Hi, I will admit straight off that I am very new to the Zaurus and reasonably new to Linux (I can navigate and use the file system ok as well as some other things but I have a LONG way to go yet)

Anyway, I am trying to get znester running. I installed it using the package manager (probably a mistake from reading a bit, I should have done it from the terminal) and the program did install ok (from the CF card to the SD card). From there I used the terminal to navigate to the correct directory (/mnt/card.opt/QtPalmtop/usr/bin/ if it helps) and typed in ./znester

I was given the following error message:

./znester: symbol lookup error: ./znester: undefined symbol: __14QPEApplicationRiPPcQ212QApplication4Type

(putty is a great thing...would never have typed that right lol)

Anyway, I have NO idea what that means so any advice would help. I had a look around but couldn't find anything to help...knowing me I was looking in the wrong place.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any and all help

D'oh sorry. Though I had put that in.

It is Open Zaurus, I believe it to be the latest version but I am at work and my Zaurus is at home so I can't be 100% sure. It is either the latest or the one just before it.

I Will double check and post here when I get home.

Have you run ipkg-link to create the symlink (automatically) to /usr/bin ?

Then you could just type znester on the command line (in any dir) and it would run.

Not a good sign. Where did you get the ipk/binary from?

I didn't do this manually but I saw that it was done when it was installing

Hope that helps...

At the moment the only thing I have working on it is XMMS and a friend helped me get that installed, so basically my Zaurus is a glorified MP3 player

Welcome to the horrible world of incompatible packages. OpenZaurus is one of the so called "modern" (aka SharpROM incompatible) distributions - that means that arbitrary packages "in the wild" are most likely not compatible with OpenZaurus. Guilty as charged.

In general, OpenZaurus has everything necessary (provided it's free software) in its own feed and you should use this one only. znester is one of the infamous exceptions, where a free software package is not in the feed - probably because it's a weird build system or a gross hack involving the SDL drama (yet another drama where people forked Zaurus specific libraries without submitting back to mainline. Unfortunately our japanese Zaurus experts are famous for this developing style...).

In short - try to use the so called sharp-compat-libs or hope that znester gets eventually added to OE which would make it part of the next OpenZaurus feed.

Sorry, I don't have a better answer for you.
Cheers,

Mickeyl: Do you think it would be worth me flashing back to the sharp ROM or sticking with OZ then. Sorry for the questions but if I don't ask I will never learn

Personally I'd say stick to OZ.

Try with the compat libs, but if at all possible learn a bit about development for OZ (look at http://openembedded.org or join us on #openzaurus or #oe) and try to add znester - if that's the only reason you have for changing back.

IMHO OZ is more stable, significantly faster, has more packages available and just easier to use than the Sharp ROMs - it can require some command line knowledge, but as you're used to Linux you will be fine.

Just my opinion of course

What network are those IRC channels on?

Edit:

Ok I don't know what I have done...but I am getting a different error message on znester....

I tried to install snes9x as well and I am getting the same error from that.

The error is:

znester: symbol lookup error: /mnt/card/opt/QtPalmtop/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0: undefined symbol: cmd__12QPaintDeviceiP8QPainterP13QPDevCmdParam

I know I am new, but this looks as if it is pointing towards the libSDL libraries....

I dunno if this helps any...hope so. Wanna play Zelda on the move lol.
