Pda Xrom Performance
« on: December 27, 2004, 04:32:58 pm »
Hello,

I'm planning to pick up a C750/760 in the future.  I was wondering about the performance of the PXA255 400-412MHz Processor.

Does Blackbox/Icewm/fluxbox fun fast?
How long does fireox or minmo take to load?
I know its x-windows...are most of my favorite debian programs available?
Can they be installed to the sd card using apt-get?
Does gaim work?
Dillo as well?

How long does it take to boot to a prompt?
How long does it take to boot into X?

Would I do better with a $500.00 laptop from walmart?

I really wanted something that I can turn on, quickly browse the web/email/ remote sysadmin.

I have a 5500, so this would be a considerable upgrade... I tried the gpe rom but I found that it was sluggish...(my opinion...of course I could just be impatient)

Thanks a bunch,

btanoue
I hope to hear some good stuff about the C750/760 before I decide to buy one of these.

Netgear Wireless CF cards are the worst, went through 2 of them!

get the 760 extra space.
it's on when you hit the power button.
firefox takes about 20 seconds to start but it's the niceest broswer for the pdax rom.
giam is great.
as for laptop or 760 . it's either size or power. your choise.
there are lots of apps look here

Remember also that once it loads, it stays there ... and you dont necessary need to reboot the system ... so you can always have your preferred apps loaded ...

Turn on - use - turn off - sequence is almost 0 in lost time.

You can run pdaxrom nicely with chrooted Debian (using the pdaxrom X server instead of the vnc one).
Take a look at http://pocketworkstation.org/

I use pdaxrom for stuff like mplayer, pim, text reading, etc.

The debian part is useful for stuff like apche, mysql, php, and the tons of other packages (although some I've named are now included in PdaXrom standard rc8 feed).

About a Zaurus or a Laptop, I agree with above post: the zaurus isn't powerful as a laptop, but it's small and faster to take out and use.

Hope this help,

Andrea

Me again,

Is it easy to get mplayer to play compressed movies?  Is a HowTo Available.  I"ll traveling alot soon and would like to pick up a movie on the plane.

1hr at about DVD Quality will fit on about 1 Gig SD/CF?

With the price of Microdrives so low these days, I guess it doesn't make sense to buy the C3K right?  I mean, the battery could be lower since the spindle in the drive is rotating.  This could be a really nice way for me to take a few DVDs that I own and compress them to a CF so I could watch a few movies as I travel since my laptop will only give me about 2-3 hrs of dvd playback.

Is the C3K and C760 using the same processor?
Is it really fast enough to decode Divix?
What are the current caveats?

I know I post many questions...I just like to be an informed geek.

Cyberwolf,

Did you succeed on installing a debian chroot on SDcard under PdaXrom ?
If yes, please could you tell me how ? Did you follow all procedure from pocketstation.org except notes for fbvnc and zvncserver ?

Thanks a lot.
Best regards

About playing movies on the Z...

I play fansubbed anime and I'm happy with it (because sound isn't that important, I need it for sound effects and understand who's saying what in the subtitles).

I never tried to watch an entire movie in my mother language to check out quality in audio (of course you can change encode quality to improve audio, but I don't know how much bitrate the Z can handle).

Back to pratical matters: I "translate" normal divx to divx playable on the Z with the following:

mencoder "$1" -srate 24000 -vf scale=320:-3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=15:mode=3 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=150 -ofps 15 -sws 2 -o "$2";

where $1 is the input file and $2 the output file.

You can check out the various options in the mplayer man page so you can see how much degraded the divx is going to be (and if still satisfies your needs).

As you can see the movie is resized to 320x200 (well, maybe less, maybe more to preserve aspect ratio in this case).

As far as I know, trying to watch a 640x480 divx on the Z isn't possibile (soooooo sloooooooow).

So in the end:

can the Z with pdaxrom play divx? Yes.

there are caveats? sure, see above.

And about the processor in C3K and C760/C860, I dunno... you have to check some review of the C3K, sure you'll discover something.

Ciao!

Andrea

Hello, I've started a separate thread on this topic at https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=9654 .

the sl-c3000 uses a different cpu than the sl-c760.  That is the reason pdaxrom and other roms do not currently support the 3000.

Compressing movies down to 320x240 with very usable sound, you can put 1 hours worth of a show well within a 256MB card.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens
