Major Problems W/ Synching
« on: January 03, 2005, 04:22:04 am »
Hey, am I glad I found these forums...

I have a Zaurus sl-5500 pda

After a few years of having this PDA, and about 30% of the time the PDA has been able to synch with the computer.  It was decent when running windows 98, but after upgrading to XP I have had nothing but problems trying to get this PDA to synch.

Here are a few problems... following the intructions to the T, the computer seems to recognize I plugged something in, but when I install the synching software, bam, finds nothing.  Tried updating the rom, nothing, I just simply can't access this PDA in any way shape or form.  I've gone through tons of e-mails with tech support, nothing has resolved this issue.

IS there major problems with this PDA and windows xp?

Is there any updated software that I should be using?

Is there a different way to synch besides wireless?

Whats the latest ROM, and where should I get it?

Any chance this PDA has been damaged from the get-go?  I am fairly familiar with computers, I have spent Hours with this thing, and I can't get anything to work.  Manually with ips, automatically, firewalls, different' computers, etc.

I would love some help.

PS - is the ram violatile?  (I think thats how you spell it) where it needs constant power from battery to keep info stored, if so, how is the backup battery charged?

What rom are you using on your 5500?

Sharp Rom?

TKC Rom?

Open Zaurus?

Something other?

What Syncing software are you attempting to use?

Are you using TCP/IP over USB?

I'm presently using the latest Open Zaurus (3.5.2) and I am syncing via wifi with my mac running Qtopia Desktop 1.7 and syncing with my PC running Windows 2000 via USB with Qtopia Desktop 1.7.

Thanks for the help.

This is straight out of the box Zaurus, and I have been trying to update with the roms Sharp has been telling me to use, so I am assuming I have been using Sharp rom, wasn't aware that other roms were available.  The syncing software that I am using the original CD that came with this PDA, thats why I wondered if it was outdated (I'm at work I appologize I can't get the exact name right now).

I have been using TCP/IP with the USB, setting the ip on the Zaurus, and going back to the computer to do the same.  However, the instructions kept telling me to change my network ip stuff, which I had no idea why it would want me to do this.

Could you possibly give me links to the Open Zaurus 3.5.3 and syncing software that you are using?

Thanks again for the help.

OpenZaurus is at http://www.openzaurus.org

Qtopia Desktop is at http://www.trolltech.com/download/qtopia/

You may want to look here: http://myzaurus.com/downloads3.asp for the latest Sharp rom for your 5500 and the latest software from Sharp.

Just a heads up that the latest Sharp syncing software will not work with Openzaurus to the best of my knowledge.
