Disable C3k's 4gb Md?
« on: December 20, 2004, 06:40:53 am »
Is it in anyway possible to disable the C3K's 4GB MD to extend the battery life?  Or would not using the MD provide the same effect? Or will the c860's battery life always be better?

The Microdrive only draws a few milliamps more than standard CF,  and that is only when it is being actively used, when not in use it will spin down and idle. I think I read somewhere that the C3000 gets like 2-3 hours continous use, and that is comparable to any other zaurii.

Disable C3k's 4gb Md?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but...  my SL-C700 with a 1 GB microdrive has this annoying habit of forcing the MD to eject and reinsert every time the device is suspended and resumed.  It's impossible to run a swap file on the microdrive because your swap file would vanish after a suspend/resume.  (So you'd have to remember to swapoff and unmount before suspending)

I assume the new device with the built-in MD doesn't have this problem.  Is it OK to run swap off of a file on the HD with the C3000?  If so, they've apparently solved those problems.

The kernel is responsible for forcing the CF slot to unmount/mount. I think I read that the reason it did that was because some CF cards could not resume while mounted(they would lock up). This same issue plagues some brands of SD(fortunately they didn't make SD unmount/mount, so with the right SD we can do some cool stuff).

Apparently they found a working combo.
