General Questions About Oz
« on: January 28, 2005, 07:24:23 am »
1) Is there a similar arrow ala tkcRom in OZ that allows you to increase the space of the taskbar, and move unwanted (or infrequently used) icons to be hidden away, and accessed when necessary? I hate the clutter, and really love that feature in tkcRom.

2) I've read quite a bit on the compat-libs, and the like, and how they're needed to run apps like Hancom. I've gone through as many threads as possible, but I'm still not certain - can hancom apps v1.5 run on OZ?

3) If I chose a 64-0 setup, and used a 64MB SD, would there be issues running apps? i.e., Opera, which I've noted doesn't 'like' running from the SD?

4) What is the frequency of crashing under OZ?

5) How much faster is OZ than tkcRom Alpha 2.0?

6) Hancom aside (since the Zaurus *is* for work), games like Motocross don't work, I take it? Or has this issue been resolved?

7) How does installing over feeds work, exactly?

8) The last time I used OZ, which was 10 minutes with 3.5.2, the wallpaper disappeared after I looked at the style settings (I didn't change anything) and couldn't figure out how to bring it back. Does that happen often, and how do you fix that?

9) Again, after using it 10 minutes, I couldn't for the life of me, figure out why the doctab wouldn't bring up my documents on my SD card. Does the card need to be formatted for a certain filesystem?

Again, thanks for answering the questions. Having used OZ, my initial impression was 'wow!'. I love the on the fly screen rotation, and the overall presentation is very slick. However, it threw me that the wallpaper disappeared and the doctab didn't work in such a short period of time. And, it didn't like the feed I tried (the official OZ feed - I probably did something wrong). If there is a place where all this is listed, please let me know and I'll figure it out on my own - I went hunting for an FAQ but found none.

Thanks!

Yes there is an arrow thing, or you can disable whichever applets you (don't) want from the Launcher.

They can run, but hancom-sheet at least doesn't work correctly as the new versions of OZ use soft-float. There were reports that hancom-word does work.

With OZ, the old pre-conceptions of things 'not liking' to be installed to storage cards is completly gone. The OZ implementation of ipkg (and ipkg-link) is vastly better than any of the Sharp ROM based ones. Pertty much anything can be installed to a storage card (exceptions being if the app needs to be run before the card has been mounted/re-mounted after reboot/suspend/etc.)

4) What is the frequency of crashing under OZ?

For me, it doesn't. It depends what you want to do with it, but it's at least as stable as the Sharp ROMs in my experience.

5) How much faster is OZ than tkcRom Alpha 2.0?

I've never run that one, but it's faster than the Sharp ROM on which it was based. Not quite sure how to quantify this kind of thing though - any suggestions? Note that with soft-float, OZ is significantly (10x iirc) faster at floating point than the Sharp ROMs.

6) Hancom aside (since the Zaurus *is* for work), games like Motocross don't work, I take it? Or has this issue been resolved?

No idea, sorry.

7) How does installing over feeds work, exactly?

You connect to the web (or a local feed if you have space), then either using aqpkg (GUI) or ipkg (command line), update the available packages list, then install the package you want from the updated list. Dependencies are handled and installed for you automatically.

3.5.2 is still the latest version. Perhaps it forgets the wallpaper if the style is changed, I've not tried it, should be easy enough to fix in the code though. I'd submit a bug if it still happens. You can always just re-set the wallpaper after altering the styles if you want a short-term fix.

Did you turn it off when you installed OZ (can be altered in Launcher). Also note the settings in the medium mount applet which tell it what to look at and what to look for (I think - I never use it myself).

Yes there is an arrow thing, or you can disable whichever applets you (don't) want from the Launcher.

To specify, I don't believe this is installed by default.  You're looking for the "subapplet" package.

I can confirm that v1.4.4, which you can download from the Hancom website, does work.  Don't use the v.1.5 distributed with the Sharp ROM's, as this uses a different package format and (IIRC) a different file selection widget that OZ doesn't have.

Actually, I find the Sharp ROM's to be more stable, but then, that's what you get when you use something called "unstable."  In all seriousness, OZ (and Hentges, which I'm using now) lock up very rarely, and its usually a "gotcha!" type of thing you can learn to avoid (e.g., Hentges locks up now if I inisert the Z into the cradle turned off, and then turn it back on--doesn't if I insert it while already on).

In a word, brilliant.  Give it a try, you'll never want to download-swap card-install again.

Thanks so much for your responses. It's been very helpful. I've flashed the Z with Tkc2.0, and after backing that up, I'm going to give this a go. Hopefully it works!

Thanks again.
