i. Is there a good imaging process where you can dd the hard drive somewhere yet? I would have thought that there is a possibility of booting from SD or CF and using dd to image the whole drive. Anyone got a working procedure or is the only procedure known still to disasemble the unit and remove the CF card for imaging..
i'm not doing backups... i always cross my fingers joker for this one
ii. Any PocketWorkstation/XQT users that graduated from an SL-Cxxx unit? How is the speed of running full debian from the Microdrive? Does it suspend/resume properly?
C3000 is my first zaurus but i could not do with the only apps of the Qt environment. I had to get firefox and thunderbird and gaim and perl and apache.... and so on on my Z. And installing and configuring and up2date keeping is a pain under Qt. So [the point is ] i've installed X/qt and debian in it and that's really nice. Using debian under X/Qt is quite slow especially for apps such as firefox and thunderbird. Once they are launched it's quite ok but launching firefox takes 1 minute or so.
the main problem is that Qt uses much memory and cpu... and then you run X and apps in it... to gain cpu and memory i deactivated the "pre"fetch option on Qt apps i'm not using (everything except calendar at the moment).
first option is: overclocking the Z with a new kernel (see the thread on overclocking). Using the freqs 624/208 is quite a good compromise between speed and good screen.
second option is : running debian by itself. i've not tested it since i've updated my kernel. But i had my Z frozen after a suspend and this sucks ! how can you use a pda which need to be re-booted after suspend, uh ? i have to try it again with the new kernel and with the default debian Xvnc (as said in another thread by someone who had the same problem).
anyway, performance is really better when using full debian (not in X/qt). but you really have to do some tweaking for the keyboard, the sound, the screen, launching scripts and so on. And the remote control does not work with xmms..
well this is it i hope it helps
