Between A C750 And A Sl6000
« on: February 16, 2005, 10:23:00 am »
Well its like being between a rock and a hard place .... I have been thinking of late of selling off one of my Zaurii - which should I get rid off - the C750 or the 6000L (of course I also have a 5000D whcih I am sure no one will touch).

I have been using both - but of late I am tending to like the 6000 more because of its utilitarian functionality - bigger screen, built-in wifi and USB (rarely).
But the C750 looks so good and the keyboard does indeed come in handy on the move that I just cant make up my mind if I should sell the 6000L at all or not.

Of course I would love to keep both - but its a luxury right now to have 3 PDA's. And I am sure once Sharp releases a better model (the C3000 was nearly there but again not quite), I will jump for that too at that point of time, and then it will be one hell of a task convincing my wife why I need yet another PDA (handheld more like).

So I am trying to prep up my wife too telling her I will sell off one of my current PDA's so that later she cant object (if Sharp gratifies us all with a US release or at least a better Japanese release).

So my technical points of debates have been

On the 6000 side
a) I like the 4" screen of the 6000L - much better readability
Nice to have the USB host feature
d) built-in Wifi (which I earleir used to say wasn't necessary) does come in handy leaving CF slot free
c) Ruggedised format - so peace of mind when I take it out.

Negatives
a) Lack of good keybard (built in)
 Lack of the C750 style
c) Lack of ROM's

On the C750 side
a) Like the Laptop format
 like the choice of ROM's

Negatives
a) have to get a Wifi Card to supplement the wifi of the 6000L
(which might drain battery faster)
have to get a bigger battery (6000L lasts longer)
c) CF slot will be tied up with Wifi card - frequent swapping needed
c) smaller screen (which I cant do anything about)

So there seems to be more negatives for the C750, but still I dont want to part with it (many of the shortcomings can be made up with extra purchases).

So which one should I really sell off - the 6000L or the C750, or really should I keep both (and risk not being able to go for the next version of the Zaurus).

On the topic of the next version - as the bare minimum - I would love to have the 6000 screen with USB host, built-in wifi and the C3000 hard drive feature and the C7xxx form factor.

Can you guys make the scale wigh down on one side either ways ? Any ideas ?

When faced with a decision such as yours, I try to take emotion out of the equation and look at which brings me the most benefit with the fewest drawbacks.

Based on what you have indicated, "I have been using both - but of late I am tending to like the 6000 more because of its utilitarian functionality - bigger screen, built-in wifi and USB (rarely).", the 750 looks like the candidate that should get the boot.

I understand your dilemna, the clamshell is the best designed handheld currently available, but the 6000 seems to be a better fit for what you want to do.  Plus, it means carrying around fewer accessories.  My 2 cents.

I don't mind the wireless card sticking out of my c860.  I use it all the time, so it's in all the time.  USB host I'd never use.  Screen could be bigger, but the reflective issue isn't a problem for me as I don't use the Z outdoors.

But it illustrates the point that each user has their own preferences and must determine which is the best fit for them.

Nilch,

I never owned a clamshell, so take that into consideration here.  I have had my 6000 for
just under 2 months. Before that i had a 5600.  What I have found with the 6k is that I gradually begin to use more and more of its capabilities as time goes by.  I thuoght at first that the usb host was "nifty" and not much more, for example. Yesterday I got built in kernel support for an rs232 usb/serial adapter working... now I will be able to connect gps to my usb cheaply. etc, etc.... \My point is, though, that one tends to increase the demands put on one of these things, and the 6000 is simply a more capable device than a 750. Go with the one that will do more for you..

On the other hand, you can sell your 6000 for way too much $$$ if you do it immediately, I think.

All I can tell you is I like my 6k and couldn't imagine selling mine to buy a 750.

If I was looking for a Wifi card for the C750 (I want to see if Wifi on C750 is as painless as its on the 6000 before selling either), which card fits in the most withiut protruding out too much, since I guess with the card out, it tough holding and thum typing on the C750 in landscape mode.

Another related question - if you keep the wifi card stuck in in the CF slot - does it still consume power, or does it shut down totally ?

I am headed out to best buy today and get a wifi card to experience Wifi on the C750.
If it isn't as easy as the 6000, then I think I will be selling off my C750 (cause, its better to stick to what works best rather than looks).

Oh, why do I have to make such tough choices in life  - why oh why  (head banging on the desk)

i am a 6000 and 3000 (happy) owner using them in wifi
IMHO wifi card doesn't consume power if disconnected

I like surfing with the 6000 because of the 4" screen but, the integrated wifi card is powerless than a wifi cf card because you don't have antenna
I have to try 10 times to connect with the 6000 ,where i have no problem with the 3000 and additionnal wifi cf card.
to resume, builtin wifi in the 6000 is really not powerful

From my reading, seems both are working pretty well for you, i.e. you will miss the features but won't die without either one. If I were you, I'd put both on Amazon.com with profitable pricing. 6k is straightforward since amazon once carried it, you can list c760 under any zaurus model with clear description/redirection. or sell c760 as Amazon auction. Amazon don't charge listing fee and the listing won't expire until it's sold. Either one sold first then you pull off the other one. If they are both sold on the same day,... life is tough  Sorry if you think this is thread crap, but that's just the way I face tough decisions.

Between A C750 And A Sl6000
« Reply #7 on: February 22, 2005, 02:17:45 pm »
I bought a Ambicom Wifi card for my C750 (to see how wifi on a Cxxx series compares to 6000L built in wifi.

I must say it is much much faster than the 6000L. I haven't tested for distance and range and all that, but connection speed wise (it is a 802.11b card) it is a lot faster than the 6000L. In fact even in public wifi spots (Bryant Park), it connects at once while with my 6000L it was a hit and miss effort sometimes (particularly if the 6000L was sitting in its case).

So I decided to sell off my 6000L (can't really keep both) and price wise the 6000 might fetch me better price than the C750 (which I have used for more than a year). The only thing to make up for the 6000L capacity is a larger battery for the C750. Wifi seems to drain faster on the C750 than on the 6000L. Hope I dont stand to regret this decision later and hope Sharp releases a best-of-both device soon and within financial reach.

Thanks guys for your inputs...
