Sl-c3000 Support Starting Point
« on: February 23, 2005, 11:24:22 pm »
hi, i bought a Z off ebay boxed, with all the japanese documentation and packaging. when i powered it up i found it had been converted to english (mostlylike ) from the Dynamism website:

"Included Software:
The Zaurus SL-Series is a LINUX-based PDA. The Zaurus comes with the following pre-installed software: HancomWord (for .doc), HancomSheet (for .xls), Email, Calculator, World Time, terminal window, Image viewer (for .jpg, .bmp, .gif), Media player (for .MP3), NetFront browser, Text editor (for .txt), ToDo list, telnet, English handwriting recognition and keyboard input methods. The Zaurus OS has been approximately 97% converted from Japanese to English, so some incidental pull-down menus are not readable."

is seems maybe the Z was converted somehow, but i can't find the remnants of the Dynamism conversion, and hancomword has mostly [] characters. i can purchase support and an english conversion rom, but i don't know if this is the best way to proceed (that is is this exact;y what i have now... not that great). I had WIFI running, and woud like to use at least an audiovox GPRS card with it (plus the hope for a bunch of CF cards i have) plus mostly a linux workstation. all the PIM and MS doc's are served by my pocketpc's. should i buy into the support, or are there rom images availble for the unit with this basic functionality available yet?

Thanks in advance!!
John

"Converting" a Zaurus to English can generaly be done "manually", there are quite a few howtos on the net explaining to various degrees what is required. So your unit has probably been converted that way, instead of originating from Dynamism, as I think Dynamism do their homework rather well and there probably wouldn't be much Japanese leftover (except for a few items that are hard-coded).

People selling Zauruses or providing support (Dynamism, Trisoft, etc.) seem to be genuinely helpful and user-friendly, from what I can tell by browsing Zaurus forums and reading docs and websites, so purchasing support might be a wise move. On the other hand, if you've got some time, are not afraid to experiment a bit and use the console, you'd probably be able to achieve some result on your own with the help of this board's gurus and other knowledgeable and friendly guys out there...

Well, the availability of "custom" ROM images with English locale and such depends on which model of Zaurus you purchased (I don't think you mention that in your post, but I'm not yet fully awake and could have missed it...

There are a few alternatives for "old" devices, but for instance the C3000 is (as of mid February 2005) stuck with the Sharp original ROM, though that will certainly change soon!

As for me, I was able to convert my SL-C3000 to English (well, whatever can be done at least) with the docs found on the net, and I've got Wifi, GPRS etc. working fine too. There's light at the end of the tunnel!

my wifi works ok as well. i am seriously considering the support if i knew the wordapp actually came with english menus... where did you get your GRPS info? this is what really makes the device useful for me

btw: yes it's an SL-C3000

Welcome to the Z Club, John!

Think you'll enjoy it!

As for the conversion....Very easy on the C3000....

The easiest thing to do is to go to Conics.net website and go to the SL-C3000 webpage. From there click on the link about English conversion. Download the 'mcconvert' file and either put directly in the Z's 'Install' folder or one on a SD or CF card.

Then go to the 'Settings' tab (the one with the wrench symbol) on the Z and then click on the 'Add/Remove Software' icon. After window opens, Click on 'Install Software' button. Wait till list shows and click on 'mcconvert' file. Then click 'OK' button  on the 'Install this package....' Window that pops up.

This will install the file that converts your Z to English for you!

I found that this does a very good job. My Handcom Word menus are ALL in English now...

Enjoy!

HTH,

Mark
