Hancom Spread Sheet Search Time Z3000
« on: March 30, 2005, 05:20:39 am »
[ Invalid Attachment ] Hi there,

I'm considering buying the Z3000, but I would like to know how fast the cell search time is in the spread sheet program.

Could someone please loade the attached file on their Z 3000, do a few cell searches and tell me what the search time is.

I would really appreciate this help.

Best regards from

First of all, the sheet application on the 3000 can only open .xls files (maybe other spreadsheet formats, I don't know, but not .txt or .csv files). So I tried to convert your .txt file to a .xls file on my desktop PC, I don't know how relevant the result will be...

The resulting .xls file is about 730 Kb, and takes something like one minute to open on the 3000 (you've got a notice when you try to open the file, warning you that this is a big file and that the loading time could be long).

Searching a string that appears at the start of the file is fast, and scrolling is fast too.

But if you jump to the end of the file (around line 6985), then scrolling the screen either horizontally or vertically is a pain as it takes a few seconds (more than 30 seconds for a single column scroll, and if you want to scroll by a few columns or if you mistakenly tap twice on the arrows of the scrollbar, then it's another 30 to 35 seconds for each tap...)

Scrolling back (with a drag of the scrollbar) to the first line takes ages too.

When you're at the top of the sheet, doing a find on the "bindinger" string (which appear at line 6819 for instance, and in the three last lines as well) takes 55 seconds or so.

Performing a "Go to" command (when I'm still on the $A$6189 cell) takes 47 seconds...

IMHO it's definitely a no go, unless you have a lot of time to waste, or unless you can convert your spreadsheet file to something else, more efficient (some database, maybe?)

Hope this helps (and sorry for the bad news!  )

Dear Euroclie,

Thansk a lot for your answer. In fact, the file was in its origin a .xls, but I was not allowed to attach a file with this extension in the forum, so I converted it to .txt.

You converted it back to .xls and the size you indicate is the same as the original file, so your test is indeed useful for me.

The result is scary, to say the least. I have used the same file on a HP Jornada 720 and here the load time was 10 seconds, scrolling from column to column and even paging down one page at a time was very smooth, without any delay. The cell search time was 10-15 seconds and that was also to much for me. On a business trip I was working in a group wtih this file and we had to do a lot of searches to make some decisions, but we gave up.

But the Z is much slower I can understand. To bad. I think I will have the Samsung Nexio tested as well.

Thank you again and best regards
