Planning To Get A New Zaurus
« on: April 13, 2005, 07:45:19 am »
Hi,
I'm planning to get a new Z in the near future (tomorrow???   )
But I'm now in doubt, what do you think could be better, a c1000 or a c860?
I will probably get it directly from Japan, so I don't think I'll have much trouble converting c860 into english, but what about c1000? Will that be easy too?
Besides I'd like to test some ROMs in it, to see which one will I end using.
There's an offer for c860 but... what's there for c1000?
For what I've read already I see c1000 is a better Z than c860, better processor, keyboard and better-looking (I know almost everything depends on personal tastes, but reading a lot you might build your own opinion...), but I don't know if that would be enough to compensate the (possible) lack of support... (I don't really care the price, they are almost the same)
That's it, I'm almost at the same point when I started thinking of it.
Some help, please.

the c1000 is the future, and will be the better investment. it also has usb host!
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

I'm in the same boat. I've decided on the C1000 mainly because the 860 is more expensive (usually) and the C1000 has a USB host port (very cool). I am worried about the lack of ROM support for it though. I imagine fairly soon the C1000/C3000 will be more widely supported....

Just to lend a little experience.  When I first bought the 760, there was no other roms besides the stock rom.  The basic sharp rom was decent, but when the other roms came out (including the sharp based cacko rom) the Z became exceptional.  With the introduction to the 1000, people are just starting to make custom roms for the 3000/1000.  I would advise the 1000 over the 860 for all the reasons specified (price, future roms, usb host) plus I'm guessing the hardware might be a little better (my sound on the 760 is not quite right)
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

Many thanks to all (I just quoted last post to save room   )
I agree with all you said. Look towards future, always, and talking about computers, even more..
What still worries me a little is the language (I studied some japanese tho, and still do sometimes, and learnt a bit, but that's one thing and reading Kanji  or Hiragana is another. You japanese guys got an awesome sense of art to write!   )
What I read in some post is sound is a lot better in c1000, but that's is kind of secundary to me, unless sound from earphones improved too.

I AM patient (sometimes   ), and I can wait for new ROMs, and these guys do work fast (thanks to all), but I'd like to translate it as soon as possible.

Anyway, if I am not able to translate it, it will be an stimulus to go on with japanese

The stock rom can be localized for english very easily.  You don't need to know japanese.

Thanks for confirming. I thought it would be easy. Just didn't have the time these days to take a look.

The C860 is slightly, but significantly smaller (It's right on my limmits for the size of a PDA!), but apart from that, the C1000 is better, USB, improved keyboard, and the processor should overclock to 600Mhz, not just the max 400 - 450ish of the C860's processor. (I have not confirmed this works, but the PXA270 can go up to 624Mhz rather than the 400 of the PXA255, also, I think the PXA270 performs better at some things clock for clock).

And as there is space where the c3000 has the microdrive, you can stash random little things inside your C3000! Wahoo!

FYI Overclocking tests on the C3000 have shown that yes it can be done, but it gets hot and goes through the battery FAST!

Overclocking the C3000 is not recommended, and with the C1000 using the same processor I wouldn't recommend overclocking it either.

But have fun and test away! :-)

This is what I found here:

Comparing the PXA270 to the PXA255

Features that do not exist in the PXA255:

    * 256kB internal SRAM
    * USB 1.1 host controller
    * Baseband/Multimedia Interface
    * Memory Stick host controller
    * Keypad interface
    * Universal SIM interface

Main improvements to PXA255’s existing features:

    * Power management (Wireless SpeedStep)
    * Wireless MMX
    * More advanced LCD controller
    * 3 instead of 1 SSP
    * USB 2.0 device controller instead of USB 1.1
    * RTC now can be used with a backup battery
    * 4 instead of 2 PWM outputs

Size matters for me but not so much, so that won't mean a bunch of points for c860.
